Om Imogene's Marriage of Convenience
"What if I asked you to marry me? I own a ranch, I have enough money to support all three of you, and my house is more than big enough." Michael paused, wincing as if just realising the full extent of his own words. "What I mean is - we would be married in law only. I would not expect anything from you and we would simply share a house. A marriage of convenience, if you will."
Imogene opened her mouth - to shout, to order him to leave, anything - but all that left her lips was a heavy sigh. If Michael was as genuine as he seemed, it was a decent option. It was either that or let her children starve. With a sigh, Imogene looked him in the eyes and muttered, "I suppose it's better than my other options. All right, then."
They looked at each other for a long moment; her eyes dark and sombre, his concerned but relieved.
The only thought that passed her mind was what have I just agreed to?
