Bibelen er den mest sentrale boken i vår kulturhistorie, og har utkommet i en lang rekke utgaver siden tekstene ble samlet i de første århundrene e.Kr. Finnes det da et behov for enda en oversettelse? Ja, svarer Kjell Arild Pollestad, som i likhet med Martin Luther, om lag 500 år etter, egenhendig har stått for oversettelsen. I et fyldig forord til denne utgaven gir han uttrykk for sine beveggrunner, noe som kort fortalt handler om at tradisjonens lange historie med forhandlinger om tekstens form og innhold, paradoksalt nok har brakt dagens oversettelser i utakt med de originale tekstene. Navnet «bibel» kommer av det greske biblia - «bøker», og Bibelen inneholder litteratur av ulike sjangere, fra historiefortelling, lovtekster og salmer til visdomslitteratur og profetier, evangelier og brev. Egentlig består Bibelen av to nokså ulike skriftsamlinger, der den største og eldste, som i kristen tradisjon kalles Det gamle testamente, er jødenes hellige skrift, skrevet på hebraisk, mens den langt kortere kristne tilføyelsen, som kalles Det nye testamente, er skrevet på gresk. To hovedprinsipper har fulgt oversettertradisjonen: en bokstavtro praksis (konkordant), der oversettelsen bestrebet seg på å gjengi det hebraiske ord for ord, og en annen praksis der det handlet om å bringe tekstens mening over på et normert språk som alle kunne forstå (idiomatisk). Pollestads oversettelse er et forsøk på å fremlegge Det gamle testamente - og særlig det som finnes av fortellende prosa - på et språk som makter å forene noe av det særegne ved den enkle, billedrike og kroppsnære hebraiske uttrykksmåten med en stil og en rytme som kjennetegner norsk litteraturspråk på sitt beste. Pollestads rettesnor for oversettelsen er det poetiske og billedrike språket i originalen, og han går i rette med tradisjonens hang til ideologisk tilrettelegging samt tendensen til å forenkle tekstens tvetydigheter.
