Romany Gypsy True stories, Bittersweet and sometimes funny, from my childhood.1943 to 1959These are true Romany Gypsy stories from my childhood as I remember them, with a little bit of the author's artistic license to make them more enjoyable. If you are looking for stories that romanticize a Romany Gypsy life on the open road, then this book is probably not for you. However if you are interested in the true life of Romany Gypsy's, you may find this book interesting. Not all Romany Gypsies lived in wagons but more often houses, preferring a permanent base where they couldn't be told to move on, but still travelling and living the gypsy life in their horse-drawn vardo wagons, carrying on the Romany traditions of flower and rag rug making, duckering (fortune-telling), and hawking (selling) flowers and firewood logs from a horse-drawn cart, as me and mum did, travelling back and forth from the gypsy Camp on Belverdere Marshes the hop picking and fruit farms. Many kept their carts and horses in their backyards as we did. Some had vardos (horse-drawn wagons) and houses, as did my grandad's sister, Ocean. Family History: Lords, Ladies, and Gypsies going back to over 700 hundred years. We are related to Princess Di and her boys. If family lore is correct, then Princess Di is our fifteenth cousin once-removed (that means fifteen generations back, we shared a grandad).Winston Churchill is also our thirteenth cousin three times removed. The removed bit means they are not of the same generation as us. Diana is actually of my mum's generation, and Winston is the same generation as my great grandad. Sarah Ferguson and her daughters are also our cousins. We share a great grandad back in the 1400s called Richard Yate.I met HRH Prince of Wales in 1996 in Crimea, Ukraine. At the time, I was not aware that he was family. He never mentioned it either. Sadly none of the family were invited to either Diana or Sarah's wedding. Probably with all our travelling about they lost our address.Review by: Robert Dawson, President of the RTFHS, That's how realistic and authentic Lenny Harvey's book is - so spot on, so accurate, so as it was. He takes you right there... I couldn't put it do
Warning to the hate-crime police: this memoir is not politically correct. What it is, though, is a story very appropriate for Valentine's Day. It is a story of searching for truth and falling in love with something greater than oneself, greater than humanity, greater than nature, the world and the universe. Paul quickly realized - even as an atheist - that there is no point in trying to make everyone like you. No matter what position you take, there will always be someone on the opposite side of that opinion. Given that, we might as well pursue the truth and do what we think is right, correct? Truth reveals itself as seen here in these three strange occurrences that challenged his concept of truth: 1. How does an atheist scientist end up married with several children? Is not the world overpopulating from the totalitarian perspective? If that is true, wouldn't having several children be irresponsible? Why would a trained doctoral scientist from a top university do such a thing? Was he not shocked when he found scientists, business leaders, doctors, scientists, engineers and other intelligent rational professionals were having more than two children? 2. How does a Wall Street analyst in New York City, often considered the center and top of the world, voluntarily leave Wall Street when there was more and more money to be made? Had he lost his marbles? What could be better than making a ton of money? But then we look around and see that most Wall Street professionals do leave Wall Street on average about four years after starting... so the fact that Paul lasted twice that time also seems unlikely. 3. Why would a nerdy science geek break up with a handsome woman who comes from wealth? As an atheist, why would it matter that she claimed to be a witch? If there was no such thing as a witch, or anything like that, why care about any label she gave herself? Except ... was there trouble coming from being with a person claiming to be a witch?
John Garner Clark was 19 and Peggy June Riley Clark 17 when they married in 1952. In April 2023, they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Signs of dementia started showing up in Peggy in 2011. Gradually, her dementia worsened until the Clark family decided she needed to be in an assisted care facility. In 2021, a nurse suggested hospice. John was shocked. He said: "I guess I was not prepared for this news. I know Peg has been praying that the Lord would go ahead and take her home, but I guess I'm not ready to give her up yet. Still, I would not like her to continue in this 'hell on Earth' situation, so I am agreeing with her prayer." . . . (See Page 105) "She was expecting the Lord to come and get her tonight. . . . I told her I would be right behind her. She laughed and said that she would walk slowly, so I could catch up." . . . (See Page 57) Peggy gently entered into the Lord's presence on May 3, 2023.

This memoir depicts an eyewitness account of some of the social and political antecedents to the 20th Century's pivotal cataclysms. While broad in scope this is the light but illuminating story of a scientist, politician, traveler, and patriot's odyssey leading up to and including World War I and the Russian Revolutions. Readers will live the sweeping story of positive and negative synergies in science, technology, and government played out on a local, national and global scale. This account should provide a human dimension and insights into an otherwise complex chain of events that led to the major turning point for Western Civilization in the 20th Century.
This is a remarkable autobiography about a family matriarch born in 1931. Her family may think they know her story, but she lived many adventures that you may not believe. "I want you to know that I had a life before I knew you, and my early life does affect you whether you know it or not. You are affected because of all family and the people I have known and relationships with those people. It is probably not of great interest to you now with your lives being so busy and going at such a rapid pace. You will most likely say "I know all about you" but that will not be the truth . It is only your perspective. You will say "Oh Lord, I have heard all those old stories." I think you believe you have heard them, but you might be surprised."This is my story of what life was like for me as a Black American woman from 1931 onward. See for yourself how much has changed (or not changed) since that time.

This is a true story my Mother told me about her own life. From the moment she was born she was a woman of courage, birthed into a family that did not want her. She had to fight for her rightful place in this world and she succeeded. With much faith to sustain her, she was determined to fight the many uphill battles that lay in her path with discipline and kindness. She always hoped for a better future, surviving one day at a time. As you will read in the following pages, she lost a family, survived challenging times, was thrust into a world she'd never known, but managed to find love, marriage, her own kids and family. She knew joy and hardship as she navigated a challenging world. She loved her expanding family dearly, and later in life never forgot a grandchild's birthday until they reached the age of eighteen. Every year all of them happily knew a card would be coming with a five dollar bill inside for them. I hope you enjoy reading this book as she was truly a fantastic woman. I feel her story is well worth sharing.

Memoir of my Journey through God's Flight School during my formative years and adult careers as I endeavored to stay grounded in those Christian values which I was taught. All the while learning that it was God lifting me step-by-step toward higher goals for which He prepared to prosper me and give me hope for and a future.

Moray was a businessman, who sometimes could not find enough hours in the day to do his job. On this particular occasion, he needed to be at two important business meetings in different parts of the country on the same day. To save time, he made the snap decision to charter a private plane to take him from Swansea to Exeter. Being an experienced airline passenger meant this flight should have been quite routine. However, the idea proved to be something he would soon regret, turning into what he describes as a 'horrific experience' that he will never forget. This very funny true story will tell you about events that are almost unbelievable. With the benefit of hindsight, many of them are now hilarious. In the first instance, Moray should have realised there would be problems when he heard the name of the company that he would be flying with. Learn about the terrifying experiences he endured on his short journey, that ended up taking much longer than expected. The day that this occurred, the weather was so bad that he genuinely thought he was going to die. Amongst many amusing happenings, discover the hysterical tale of how Moray wrestled with the pilot while in flight, over who should hold the map. As well as the horrendous take off, journey and landing, and the unbelievable story of the conversation he had with a member of the control tower before his flight home. As he says, "You couldn't make this up".

"I hope it snows again. That was beautiful. It's so black after the fire, you can't tell the land from the dead trees."If you have read the first book, you must read this second book as well. NM Reed will tell you the agonizing reality of the event's trails. It unravels much more than a fire incident.NM Reed tells the story of evacuation and getting the dogs and horses back to the ranch in book one. However, in book two, Reed will tell you the story of the struggles of getting back on their feet again. On the 8th day after the fire, the residents of Calaveras County were finally allowed to go back to their properties. Reed is working and trying to keep things going. A guy from UPS delivered a bolt of wood and some donations came by. Their generosity gave Reed the encouragement and hope to continue. In mid-October, the same year the fire happened, the politics has started already and the county is threatening to fine anyone who brings out a trailer to live in without doing all the proper paperwork first. Then the guy from the UPS told Reed that FEMA will come in and sift through her stuff and cart it off, but that they will be billing PGE because they are admitting they started the fire. One thing that makes this book hookable is because of its rawness and authenticity. The way NM Reed narrates the story feels like you're with her on that day. It is detailed and she didn't even hesitate to leave a word behind. These are qualities of true stories, ones that you must look for when seeking for good ones.In December 2015, a guy working from SBA came over and reviewed the damage to her barn. He measured the barn and estimated the damage of just the shop contents to be over 20 grand. They could not replace the barn but they could get her some working capital for the winter, to replace machinery and some wood. After being in drought for a decade in California, it finally rained. Big storms are coming again in January 2016. Meanwhile, PGE talks about "RESTORING" her property knowing it won't ever happen but even if she would get money from them, she will always be plagued by problems now that the balance is ruined. What the author went through was surreal. She was deprived during the dreadful occurrence. The aftermath of the Butte Fire was as frustrating as the fire incident itself. As much as NM Reed likes to think that everything was just a bad dream and she still has her barn, she has to face the ugliness of truth. She has to stand and go back to start again. After the Fire: finding life again in the burn scar. The Butte Fire Re-population, follow-up to Home Is Where the Horse Is: Surviving the Jackson Butte Fire EvacuationThe follow up story of the Jackson Butte Fire disaster, "A Safer Place to be". When the fire broke out on September 9th 2015, the author was forced to evacuate her ranch in the woods in the 15 minutes provided by the county sheriff. The evacuation itself was a disaster. But the follow-up story is heart breaking. This week to week journal of what happened between re-population and the final settlement with the power company 3 years later, the story unfolds like a horror novel. Everything seems to go wrong, from illegal tree poaching to gun fights, buried bodies and running for their lives. But the author lives to tell the tale, of bare black earth and flooding rain and mud slides, to the ground turning green again with over-abundant brush and grass growth. Horses escape, and the feral cat finds her way back outside, even without her feet. An amazing often hair-raising, and sometimes heartening tale of survival and perseverance against all odds in the burnt out wilderness of Calaveras county, California after the Butte Fire disaster of 2015, when 74 thousand acres were blackened in a matter of hours and lives were shattered or lost.
Illustrated with fifty drawings by the author, this is the story of one woman's courageous struggle to find herself. It begins with her childhood in Australia. A victim of family violence, her only resolve was to survive until she was old enough to leave home. A teenage pregnancy which resulted in her losing her son, caused her to turn to drugs. Leaving Australia, she vowed to find the meaning of life, swearing never to return until she did.Her travels in Thailand and Japan offer a unique description of Asia in the post-Vietnam war period - a time when only few Westerners, let alone a young blonde woman, were travelling this route. Heavily dependent on drugs, she worked from day to day to support her habit and narrowly escaped a prison sentence.A lucky chance took her to India where she ended up in the ashram of the spiritual master, Osho, in Pune. For the first time in her life, she felt truly at home. With Osho's guidance, she learned to trust enough to find a way out of her addiction. Despite many challenges, she never gave up hope of reestablishing contact with her son.

This is the story of a true iconoclast, a guy who always thought, "Tell me which way the crowd is going, and I want to go in the opposite direction." An interesting against the grain life. A cursory account would include sixteen intermittent years of full-time day college, leading to a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a Ph. D. at the age of fifty-two; roughly twenty-one different jobs, including flight attendant, insurance salesman, iron worker, bartender, welder, stockbroker, pipe fitter, ocean lifeguard (30 summers), taxi driver, and, finally, college professor, just to mention a few; married for the first time at the age of sixty-two, and becoming a father for the first time at the age of sixty-three. Now at 80, I'm looking forward to what the next twenty years will bring.

Never assume what is going on behind closed doors in someone's life. To the outside world I was confident with a successful career and loving husband. The reality was I was spiralling into the darkest depths of addiction with what seemed like no way out. I was an exceptional actress with the ability to hide the truth. That mask had to slip at some point, the truth would be known, in my case with potentially deadly consequences. This is my story. This is my recovery. This is the journey that has shaped me.

However, his unwavering determination and resilience once again propelled him towards victory, on his own terms.
Tom Miller has been writing about conflict and culture in the Americas for close to 50 years. His books include On the Border, an account of his travels along the U.S.-Mexico frontier; The Panama Hat Trail about South America; Trading With the Enemy, which takes readers on his journeys through Cuba; and, about the American Southwest, Revenge of the Saguaro. Where Was I? A Travel Writer's Memoir zigs and zags through the riotous 1968 Democratic National Convention, smokes marijuana on the rooftop of a comfortable South American hotel, and spends the better part of a year traipsing around Cuba. Miller, a veteran of the anti (Vietnam) war movement and the underground press of the 1960s, spent months with migrants, musicians, and muck-rakers. He wrote about the Third Country between the United States and Mexico for the New York Times, and tracked down the origins of the song "La Bamba." In Spain he located an original 1605 first printing of Don Quijxote, and in Cuba held in his hands Ernest Hemingway's 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. Writer Adam Hochschild says Where Was I? contains "sharp observations from a man who's been everywhere you'd ever want to go, known everyone you'd ever want to meet, and brought it all alive in a voice you wish you had." Martin Cruz Smith says "Miller has the passion, wit, and style of a great journalist." Linda Ronstadt simply says, "I am a Tom Miller fan."
