Om Artisan Baking
The scientific nature of baking is often cited as an analogy. We can all agree that baking bread is very similar to making beer, what with all the measuring, weighing, mixing, and fermenting involved. What we don't hear about as much as we should be is how baking is an art form and how the goods created by the artisans are magnificent marvels. Art is defined as the "considered application of skill and imaginative imagination to the creation of aesthetic objects. Baking is a perfect example of how this term might be used. In order to create an original work of art, the artist must use their imagination within the constraints of their chosen medium. Paint is something all painters use, but no two paintings are ever the same. Most baked items have a standard set of ingredients across the baking industry. But each individual baker brings their own set of knowledge, beliefs, strategies, and skills to the process, resulting in a really one-of-a-kind end product. Nothing else in the world will taste quite like the baked goods you create. A baker's greatest advantage is their imagination. They deserve respect and admiration from artists of all disciplines for their ability to take ordinary materials and convert them into something wonderful. If you're a baker who doesn't see oneself as an artist, it's time to stop playing down your talents and start flaunting them.
