Wounds include disturbances in the normal structure and function of the skin and underlying soft tissue caused by trauma or chronic stress. Loss of epithelial continuity with or without loss of underlying connective tissue (e.g., muscle, bone, nerves) following injury to the skin or underlying tissues and organs caused by surgery, trauma, cuts, chemicals, heat/cold, frictional force/shear, pressure or as a result of disease. The symptoms of the wound depend on the location of the wound, its depth and the cause. In general, ulcers present with pain, redness, swelling, bleeding, and loss or dysfunction of the injured area. Symptoms may include fever, foul-smelling pus discharge, and heat, especially in cases of infection.
