Traveling South

A study of how narratives of travel through the antebellum South helped construct an American national identity during the years between the Revolutionary and the Civil Wars. The author makes his case on the basis of a broad range of texts including slave narratives, domestic literature, soldiers' diaries, and traditional forms of travel writing.
