As a middle-aged spinster, most women would be anxious to marry. But Theresa, as an almost-forty black woman in Colorado in 1896, and a suffragette to boot, has a tough row to hoe. Freed as a young woman by the War Between the States when she was a child, her memories of living in bondage are as vivid as if they'd happened yesterday. Which is why she has no intention of giving up the fight to win her independence. As a business owner, she can direct change. Toby Young, a Pinkerton agent and a freeman of color, loves his job. Nobody notices servants, and so he is busy with cases all around the country. But when he lands in Whispering Pines to help an old friend prove a new friend innocent, he petitions the Pinkerton Agency to allow him to stay in Colorado. Besides, there is a certain woman who has attracted his attention. Will Theresa be able to get her business off the ground and remain true to her longings as a suffragette?
