In the early 1960s Dr. Blanchard had the good fortune to experience societies who had yet to thrust themselves deep into the twentieth century and were generations behind the physical and cultural progress of the western world. His good fortune led to some interesting and rewarding experiences interrupted by frequent returns to the world he left. They were insufficient to give him the appreciation of how much and how rapidly his own world was changing.
