While the advances in the pure science have been largely of such a character that they should not be included in an elementary textbook, the development of industrial organic chemistry has tended to vitalize the subject and to arouse the interest of the beginner As the result of the recent war there was an increased demand for a large number of organic compounds of industrial importance.
