1869, Sonora, Mexico. Rachel Rios is engaged to Paulo Delgado, the son of a wealthy landowner, but she detests the man. Theirs is a marriage arranged between their fathers to combine the wealth of two powerful Sonoran families. She is resigned to her fate, until tall, rugged, Tennessee cowboy Rusty Cunningham thunders into the courtyard and brings her engagement party to a halt.
Rusty Cunningham arrives in Mexico to help his friend purchase horses for his ranch in Missouri. When his trail boss is shot by horse rustlers, Rusty goes in search of a doctor, leading him not only to Rachel but a mystery he must solve.
