Although planktonic protists play an important role in ocean ecology, they are genetically very diverse, making it difficult to draw conclusions on the group as a whole. However, tintinnid ciliates are a single, species-rich, sub-order with unique characteristics, and for whom ample information exists on their ecology and biogeography.
