The Animatist

Fifteen-year-old Kasondra Keene is a minstrel's daughter in thirteenth century Europe with no interest in the social constructs or religious superstitions of her time. She devotes herself instead to strengthening her budding relationship with the natural world eventually creating a bond so strong, and so uncanny, that she sometimes seems to be one with nature itself.
She is convinced that eons earlier the human race was somehow diverted from its true course and when forced to enroll in an academy for maidens, she delves into philosophy and history for proof. But inevitable complications result from close contact with others, and she discovers that not everyone at the academy are who they appear to be.
Unexpected tragedy forces Kasindra to balance the world extant and her vision, but soon, she is pursued by someone so dark and desperate for revenge, that she is compelled to tap into the power she'd hoped to hide.
