A guide for English-speaking readers to the mythology behind Richard Wagner's operas - myths brought from the Orient to the shores of the Baltic. The legends which have Siegfried for their central figure are found in their earlier written forms in the Eddas and the Sagas, as preserved in Iceland. They appear again in changed forms in the great medieval epic, the Nibelungen Lied, and, in our own day, notably in Wagner's majestic operas of the Nibelungen Ring.
At the time of original publication in 1904, W. C. Sawyer, Ph.D., was Professor of the German Language and Lecturer on Teutonic Mythology in the University of the Pacific.
