S. Maria ad Cryptas

The church of Santa Maria ad Cryptas is located, like many other Abruzzo churches, in an isolated place, about a kilometer from the village of Fossa and a few kilometers from the abbey of Santo Spirito in Ocre, which it depended for a certain period. It is one of the most beautiful examples of thirteenth-century architecture. However, its origins are older. Some scholars, including Bindi (Bindi, 1889) and Gavini (Gavini, 1927), have argued that it was born as a temple in the ninth or 10th century AD according to the canons of Roman-Byzantine architecture, which finds its characteristic element in the presence of the hypogeum or crypt. On this structure, about four centuries later, the religious building was erected according to the Gothic-Cistercian style, by Benedictine workers. La chiesa di Santa Maria ad Cryptas si trova, come molte altre chiese abruzzesi, in un luogo isolato, a circa un chilometro dal paese di Fossa e a qualche chilometro dall'abbazia di Santo Spirito ad Ocre, di cui fu dipendenza per un certo periodo. Essa rappresenta uno dei più begli esempi di architettura duecentesca. Le sue origini però sono più antiche. Alcuni studiosi, tra cui il Bindi (Bindi, 1889) e il Gavini (Gavini, 1927), hanno sostenuto che essa nacque come un tempio nel IX o nel X secolo d.C. secondo i canoni dell'architettura romano-bizantina, che trova il suo elemento caratteristico nella presenza dell'ipogeo o cripta. Su questa struttura, circa quattro secoli dopo, venne eretto l'edificio religioso secondo lo stile gotico-cistercense, ad opera di maestranze benedettine.
