Om Raising a Shar Pei Dog
The Shar Pei, or Chinese Shar-Pei, is a dog breed with Chinese ancestry. The term "Shar Pei" comes from the Cantonese words "sh pèih," which mean "sand skin," in reference to the wrinkled skin that is a defining characteristic of the breed.
- Shar Peis are medium-sized dogs with an unusual appearance due to their skin's tendency to hang loose and wrinkle, especially in young canines. As they develop, the wrinkles may reduce, but they often keep some wrinkling around the face and neck. They have a short, snubbed nose and small, deeply set eyes, giving them a "hippopotamus" appearance. Their tail is curved, and their ears are short and triangular.
- These dogs can have either a short, bristly coat or a longer, softer coat, and their coats come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Shar Peis have a reputation for being distant and unattached, although they are known to be faithful and devoted to their owners. Their natural protective nature makes them effective guard dogs.
When compared to other dog breeds, the Shar Pei stands out for its striking appearance and usually independent nature. They are wonderful pets for those who recognize and value their distinctive qualities and who are able and ready to devote the necessary time and effort to their proper training and socialization.
