Labor is most easily recognized by the presence of strong, regular uterine contractions. Some women have compared the pain of contractions to that of severe period cramps. When you're being crowned, it could feel like you're being stretched and burned. According to the Lamaze method of giving birth, producing sounds like moaning, groaning, grunting, repeating words over and over, and whatever sound that one's body may like to naturally create may aid to reduce pain and help labor to advance. Water breaking, or the rupture of membranes, is another major indicator of labor. A newborn is protected and cushioned by a fluid-filled sac while in the womb. The sac usually bursts before or during labor. It may induce a sudden outpouring of fluid or a slow, steady drip from the vagina. A clear or very light yellow fluid. If the amniotic sac hasn't already ruptured during labor, your doctor may perform an amniotomy to do so. An amniotomy is a procedure in which a fine plastic hook is used to puncture the amniotic sac, releasing the fluid inside. A prelabor rupture of membranes occurs when the sac ruptures before labor begins.
