In 1970, Women''s Liberation was sweeping the country. In the San FranciscoBay Area, some women''s "libbers" came together and formed theSan Francisco Women''s Centers to help nurture newly emerging organizingefforts fighting for women''s rights. Ten years later, it was a groupwith an annual budget in the low thousands of dollars that took the audaciousstep of buying a building in San Francisco''s Mission District. Thisbook tells the story of how they got to that point and the first twenty yearsof developing it into the home that it is today for countless women andtheir organizing efforts on behalf of girls and women.Author SUSHAWN ROBB went to scores of events and meetings at the Women''s Building in the 1980''s and served on the Board of Directors from 1994-2000. This book is based on research of the Women''s Building archives housed at the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Historical Society.Playwright MERCILEE M. JENKINS, Professor of Communication at S.F. State University, worked with students and other volunteers to collectoral histories from founders.
