Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay was a famous Bengali novelist. Most of his works have been translated into Hindi. He was born in Devanandpur village of the Hoogly district on 15 September, 1876. His childhood was full of struggles. Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay had a profound impact on his life.In this novel, there are three main characters - Devdas, Paro and Chandramukhi that symbolize the different aspects of love. Devdas and Paro share an eternal bond of love since their childhood but their love story is left incomplete. Devdas becomes a drunkard and is on the way to destruction when Chandramukhi enters his life and things begin to change.
