Motoring in the pre war era was still in its infancy but this self taught acquired skill was to be the foundation of his career throughout his life.. Arthur's self taught knowledge of driving paved the way for his army career, all described in such detail that it paints a clear picture of the events he witnessed and day to day life as a soldier during war and peacetime. Being the son of a former soldier who had won the Military Medal for saving an officers life in the trenches in WW1, the army life and camaraderie was an inherent natural way of life and became one of his happiest periods in his life.
