Far below a street in Rio, a building's foundation collapses. In China, an apartment block caves in. Under any city, any town, the earth could open next. In the halls of power, the cause of the deadly accidents is no secret-and a few lives seem a small price to pay for profit. But when a Manhattan subway tunnel collapses, the official explanations just don't add up for a Wall Street broker and a young geologist.
