As young people in urban environments we tend to hold our emotions inside. However, when these emotions build up inside of us, how do we release them? How do we express ourselves without fear of judgement or running the risk of getting caught up (by the system, in your work life, home life, love life, etc.)? Journal writing provides an emotional release to vent about issues related to your personal life. For you (and you only) to help understand yourself. It helps to reveal the inner turmoil or uncover secrets that are brought to light during the writing process.
