Well before her adolescence, her rampant ADHD and gender role confusion brewed loneliness and resentment, while deep attachment wounds kept her eagerly chasing male connection. Here, we follow her Dark Arts of the Heart as she fumbles her way through NJ grade school crushes and Massachusetts college heartbreaks; falls for handsome sociopaths in Central Park and narrowly escapes marrying an abuser in Manhattan. Dashing across the continent to LA, she unfortunately finds herself more Hollywoed than ever. With years of disappointment on her side, Madeline keeps loving and losing with foolhardy intensity. At last, she's consolidated a poetic sample that spans two decades of her growing pains, happy to bare her sharpest critique of her own sexual shame and insufferable longing. In bringing her shadow voice to light, she's determined to make sense of the madness we've come to know as human romance.
