The practise of training and cultivating small trees in pots is known as bonsai (Japanese for "tray-planted")
A bonsai is a miniature tree or shrub that has been trained by a procedure of trimming its roots and branches and tying its branches with wire. Perhaps more than a thousand years ago, people in China began training trees to take on artificial forms by growing them in trays, wooden containers, and clay pots.
