Glaucoma

The optic nerve can be damaged by glaucoma, which is a collection of eye disorders that can cause vision loss and even blindness. It's most commonly seen in those with high eye pressure, although it can also happen when pressure is normal or even low. Damage to the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain, can cause a slow, subtle decline in peripheral vision that may go unrecognized until it leads to total blindness.
- Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most prevalent form of this disease. This type normally grows slowly and is often asymptomatic in its early stages. Angle-closure glaucoma, normal-tension glaucoma, and secondary glaucoma are only a few of the many subtypes of glaucoma.
There are effective therapies for glaucoma, including eye drops, laser therapy, and surgery, that can reduce intraocular pressure and lessen the risk of visual loss if detected and managed early. If left untreated, glaucoma can result in irreparable vision deterioration, therefore quick diagnosis and adequate management are critical to protect eyesight.
