  • - Research, Romance, and Dark Days Ahead
    av Mark J Curran
    197,-

Letters from Brazil II is a continuation of Letters from Brazil, 2017. Mike Gaherty, now an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, is back in Brazil to continue research and begin the battle for publication in a "publish or perish" academic world. He now has a Brazilian visa as journalist-researcher in his role of writing occasional "Letters" to the New York Times's international section and is working in liaison with the Department of Research-Western Hemisphere Analysis of the US State Department (INR-WHA). "Letters" will chronicle what he sees and experiences in Brazil - politics, economics, and especially, daily life under the evolving military regime. The Brazilian intelligence agencies, the DOPS and the SNI, are aware of his role and keep constant surveillance on his activities. Life gets complicated as Mike juggles romantic interests both back at home and in Rio de Janeiro. And research evolves to treat the relationship between the folk-popular stories in verse ("literatura de cordel") and MPB (Brazilian Popular Music), especially regarding the composer, singer, and musician Chico Buarque de Hollanda and his efforts to write and perform in Brazil while battling with the general's censorship laws under AI-5. There are many surprises for Mike-some pleasurable, a few dangerous. Life for a researching professor turns out to be not as pedestrian as might be expected.

It is very difficult for teachers and parents to understand the psychosocialeffects of hearing loss on young children. This book can help all of usbetter understand the world from the point of view of a child with a hearingloss. This is a story about a young boy who has a cochlear implant. He attends a mainstream school and is the only child in his family with a hearing loss. This book describes his experiences in life highlighting how his hearing loss affects those experiences. In almost all the situations described in this book, the young boy, Jack, is involved in a conversation with someone. Conversations with his parents, his brothers, his speech language therapists, his playmates, and others are all presented in this book.Sometimes the conversations are not successful immediately. But all the conversations eventually succeed because Jack, the main character, receives help from someone. Sometimes Jack is able to help himself. Other times, he receives some support and encouragement from his parents to help get through a communication breakdown that occurred in some way.In this story, Jack uses a cochlear implant. The reader will have to decide how well he thinks Jack seems to be doing with the cochlear implant. The author's intent is not to evaluate the success or failure of the cochlear implant. Rather, the author is trying to focus on how well Jack is able to do in a world where everyone else around Jack has normal hearing. It is the author's belief that Jack does quite well in this world. It is the author's belief that conversations about a child's experiences having a hearing loss in mainstream schools is vital to the child's feeling of belonging to this world. These experiences are not limited to the challenges that the child might have to overcome. It also includes the experiences where the child did well and feels happy about it.It is the author's hope that this book helps you have the conversations that you would like to have with those who are a part of your life.

The Invisible House Society was founded for the sole purpose of training students of Magick in the grades of the Order of the Golden Dawn whereby they propel themselves into the Order of the Rosy Cross (these orders representing levels of attainment, not to be confused with the societies or congregations that have named themselves after these grades). The Invisible House (IH) utilizes the same structure and guidelines as is used by the A A (Astron Argon), as delivered by Aleister Crowley and George Cecil Jones. After years of initiating and training students, it was decided by the founding members to take the proven methods of training and compile them into one resource. One book. This compendium contains all of the necessary instructions for the Probationer, Neophyte, Zelator, Practicus and Philosophus. Now there exists a comprehensive resource for student advancement that encompasses guided-initiation, apprenticed-initiation, and self-initiation with the plethora of oral instructions and demonstrations put into the written word.Who should use this book? The tasks and dedication necessary to pursue the paths of Magick are daunting enough to scare many prospective students away. Superstition and societal taboo are enough to make others hesitate. Self-doubt, self-loathing, the false sense of obligation to others and ridicule from peers; the list of excuses not to become an Initiate is endless. But you, the daring individuals who take a step onto the path, who follow the calling of your hearts to something more - into truth, strength and confidence - despite what others might think, it is for you that this book has been written. You who have the desire, drive, and tenacity to take that first step and attempt to stay the course will exceed beyond the limits set upon you by your peers, discover and develop yourself into excellence. What does this book teach? The great magicians of every era have endeavored to gather together traditional wisdom and practices, update them with newer information and concepts, and further refine these systems according to the contemporary levels of comprehension and language. While maintaining the structure of the AA , Path to the Invisible House provides a clear and concise breakdown of the journey through the occult mysteries, elucidating points that have been hitherto lost, omitted or unclear, removing much of the ambiguity that is inherent in such writings, and further explaining very complex components of certain grade tasks. The methods of instruction have been refined for greater impact upon the desensitized mind of the current generations and the exercises explicated in general terms for greater application and adaptability, the desirous results the same. Path to the Invisible House has been written sequentially from the first step through to the end of the student grades and shows the student of Magick the ways of self-discovery, self-mastery and enlightenment. Each section provides a foundation and initiations necessary for success in subsequent sections. Followed through to its end, this handbook will take the assiduous student into a world where nothing is unattainable with the proper application of Will. This book puts into simple terms secrets and mysteries that have tested the vocabularies of literary masters for ages. As clear as the language is within this book, there are still subtler levels of information conveyed that act as proofs of accuracy for postulations made and confirmations of attainments described within that will go unnoticed to the uninitiated. Therefore, the value of this book increases with the progressive work and experience of the magical student. The Great Work is not a path for the chosen, but a path we choose to take.

Was it God or man that put an end to divine healing in today's Church? This is the question that led author, Reverend Jim Lynn, on a three year long study. What he learned and shares in his book will have a profound influence on the Church and deepen your faith. The Miracle of Healing in Your Church Today sets forth that all healing is at once divine and timeless, not something relegated to a chapter in the book of life. The book makes a compelling case for the Christian Church to become the healing Center God created Her to be."This book is a long-needed explanation of the mission and role of healing in the Christian community, "says Lynn. "Churches today are failing because they believe God no longer heals. The book does not question the legitimacy of the modern medicine, but questions why the Church today has severed divine healing from its divine calling. The book serves to put god back into healing, and healing back into the Church.Critical at times, the book condemns secular medicine that harms or even kills in the name of healing. "Medicine that harms is of evil. Medicine that heals is of God and never harms," says Lynn. "In God's medicine chest there is no such thing as 'acceptable risk', only healing. Our good health is not a matter of chance but a birthrght."We hear discussion today about integrated medicine. God's concept of integrated medicine is the physician, patient and Church all working together as partners (spiritual warriors). This form of medicine never harms, never kills. The human body, spirit and soul are considered as one, with each part affecting the whole. Above all, God in Jesus Christ is acknowledged as Yehovah-rapha, the God of healing.Filled with illustrations people can relate to, the book is an easy read and difficult to put down. Readers will learn why people suffer, why so few are healed when prayed for, read of healings modern medicine cannot explain, and learn why the Church mission is unfulfilled without a healing ministry.

  • - The Case of Liberia
    av Gabriel I H Williams
    443

This book is intended to contribute to the ongoing discourse about Liberia or about Africa, which has often left people perplexed. According to a 2013 World Bank report, Africa has 30 percent of the world's minerals and proven oil reserves equivalent to 10 percent of global stock. How is it that Africa, which has such enormous mineral and oil wealth, is the poorest continent in the world? A similar question would suffice for Liberia, which became independent since 1847, has been a sovereign nation for over 170 years but is ranked as one of the poorest countries in the world. This is irrespective of the fact that the country is endowed with abundant natural resources. Accordingly, I herewith submit that Africa or Liberia is not poor but poorly managed, and that corruption is a major source of bad governance, widespread poverty and instability on the continent. There can be no question that corruption is like a cancer eating at the vitals of Africa, my beloved country Liberia being one of the worst affected on the continent. This is why this book is titled, Corruption is Destroying Africa: The Case of Liberia. Because of corruption, critical public services such as health and education have remained in a state of dysfunction.

  • - A Son's Heart Discovered
    av David and Sherry Larson
    248,-

This book was unknowingly written by Bradley Jesse "Beej" Larson, a twenty-two year old college student who died in a tragic van/truck accident on April 26, 2006, just three weeks shy of his graduation from Taylor University, Upland, Indiana and two months before matriculating to University of Wisconsin Law School. Over the months since his death, we discovered six years of diaries, starting from his junior year in high school and continuing to two days before his death, a prayer journal he kept for six months in 2004, and scores of other writings on his computer-all unbeknown to us. These writings reflect a spiritually mature man who loved God and tried his best to live a life following after Him. He was not perfect by any means, as the reader will discover, but he faithfully documented his spiritual journey and the many other aspects of his life and growth that contribute to the "rest of his story" in this book.

  • - A Reminiscence and Guided Tour to Finding Happiness and Meaning in Your Life
    av William Brandt

The purpose of this book is to look at many of our experiences and things which tell us that life is indeed too short and perhaps add a little meaning to some of those things which we may not think about on a daily basis. Finding happiness in life is a goal we all aspire to. Meaning and purpose in life may not always be synonymous with happiness. This book will explore how we can have both. Most of life''s real pleasures come in small packages. Meaning and purpose in life are found in strange and wonderful ways and serve to emphasize that life is certainly worth living to the fullest each and every day.

Crickets on the Moon is a story of friendship, family, and the power of determination and cooperation in overcoming obstacles. Sirius has traveled halfway across the galaxy. He''s a diplomat-in-training with an unusual deformity, desperately trying to make good on his father''s dying wishes. He doesn''t know it, but his deformity is also the source of a potent gift he possesses. After two failed missions, time is running short, and it looks like he''s going to have to return home in shame and face possible exile. Before he embarked on his journey, his uncle told him to "find the right planet, find the right contact," but he''s found neither, until he comes across Earth, hoping he finally got it right. He selects Jonah, a 13 year-old boy who is dying from leukemia, for his mission. Sirius parks on the moon and sends a mysterious orb to Jonah, who must figure out how to use it and also demonstrate, along with four other boys chosen by Sirius, that people on Earth can responsibly use power for peaceful purposes. The boys form a club that meets nightly with the orb, with the directive to ask one question a day, and to choose their questions carefully. It will answer any question they ask. Besides Jonah, there''s his hyperactive best friend Ricky, Steven, a socially challenged science geek, Todd, Steven''s mortal enemy and a troubled, unhappy boy with dark secrets, and Joe Billy, one-quarter Arapaho who''s tried to distance himself from his heritage and the teachings of his grandfather in order to better fit in with his peers. The success of Sirius'' mission is constantly challenged by his own emotionality as well as by the boys'' struggles in their own lives and with each other. The mission culminates in a perilous adventure in the Rocky Mountains. Sirius must decide whether to risk the boys'' lives or to risk never being able to return home. Ultimately, the boys, including Sirius, learn the deeper meanings of friendship and family, and discover a greater purpose to their lives.

That one country, albeit a very big one, should contain two such different cities as Peking (set in the remote past of the emperors) and Shanghai (cosmopolitan and ahead of its time) at the same time seems fascinating in itself. And here, they are both featured in one book.Due to the financial losses and illness of her father, Arielle becomes a courtesan as the only support of her family. During training, Arielle witnesses a client''s frightening attack on a colleague. Under the instruction of Wu-a beautiful, mysterious shaman from Tibet-Arielle masters the art of self-defense and continues her training as a shaman: a person regarded as having access to good and evil spirits. In this role, Arielle''s professional name is Tara, which has Buddhist significance, meaning "she who saves through virtuous and enlightened action."The 1937 murder of a young English girl in Peking propels Tara into a daring and dangerous mission to bring the vicious American murderer from Peking to justice under his own country''s law in the International Settlement of Shanghai.

Public lecturing in England began in response to an urgent need for scientific and technical instruction, a need not being met by the established institutions. Its continuance contributed tellingly to the spread of Newtonian science no less than to inquiries and discoveries leading to the Industrial and Agricultural Revolutions. Lecturing on subjects such as anatomy and midwifery was largely responsible for improvements in public health and longevity; while later lecturing on subjecs in the arts - notably on the nation''s literary works - may be seen as having promoted reading and raised significantly the level of civilization in the land. This book brings to light and brings together figures from diverse disciplines through several centuries. It breaks down traditional barriers, as between science and the arts; while describing a vast and important movement in education and civilization in England.

  • - Living Can Be Dangerous
    av Mark J Curran
    197,-

A Rural Odyssey: Living Can Be Dangerous is the story of Mick O''Brien''s growing-up years on a small wheat farm in Central Kansas in the 1940s and 1950s. It tells of his Catholic Irish American pioneering farm parents, the religious and moral beliefs of their traditions, and the consequences of living the same way. Mick and his siblings inherited their traditions. The growing of their own food, the farm chores, the raising and caring of livestock, the field work on the tractor, and the harvest that provides the family subsistence, but not without danger. School, sports, having fun with buddies, and imaginary games filled Mick''s teenage years. Music, singing, playing the guitar, and a special friendship are an important chapter of that time as well but with unplanned consequences. Unforeseen challenges and the unpredictable dangers of life filled O''Brien''s days. Work and play, joy and sadness, Mick tells it all as it happened.

The sovereign and independent African nation of Zimbabwe matters to all Africans who are compelled by Africa''s history to continue the common struggle for the complete defeat of Western imperialism and neo-colonialism in the African continent (see appendix 3 on page 165 of this book). Hence, in essence, this book is about my individual indignation and worries with regard to the current British interventionist foreign policy towards Africa in general and British Labour''s vicious and draconian measures towards the current elected Zimbabwean Government in particular. The book exposes and criticizes the venomous and bellicose Western imperialist language employed by Number 10 Downing Street and Westminster, aimed merely at fuelling social and political division among the well-known peaceful people of sovereign Zimbabwe - a masterminded, well-calculated division which can dramatically turn one group of Zimbabwean people against another in the sake of the British economic and strategic interests under menace in this African country. The book attempts to remind many people who still do not understand what has been happening between Anthony Charles Lynton Blair and President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, to critically look at the ''1979 Lancaster House Agreement'', the London constitutional arrangement that led Zimbabwe to its independence in 1980; and also ponder whether the following crucial statement made by the South African President Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki on the root causes of a longstanding bitterness land dispute between Britain and Zimbabwe has been true or false:"Britain and other Western countries had broken promises, dating from 1979, to fund peaceful land redistribution in Zimbabwe."Not a single British MP/politician from the three main political parties I wrote to since 2004 has been able to provide a straightforward answer to the above President''s statement. The book also focuses on Mr Tony Blair''s perversity to continue to fight against the principles of sovereignty and national self-determination of African people, principles set forth by the West itself to give nations the right to make their own decisions without interference from others. On the contentious relations between Westminster and Harare, I deliberately wrote to a total number of 50 British MPs. Although there are heavyweight, middleweight and lightweight MPs in the House of Commons, this book reveals serious contradictions on the interpretation of Ministerial and Constituency Commitments or Parliamentary Convention, a restriction which prevented some MPs from entering into correspondence with me on the issues I have raised with them (Refer to page 54 of this book). More interestingly, the book discloses the impact of my investigation on British MPs interests in Africa, which might have resulted to some frustrated MPs to press on ''DOD''S PARLIAMENTARY COMPANION'' publisher to remove the request of ''countries of interest'' from the biographies of all British MPs. Refer to page 88 of this book to see clearly the alterations made on the biographies of the ''quite man'' Iain Duncan Smith, former Conservative leader who led his party very briefly and Frank Dobson, Labour MP(read Dobson''s replying letter to me on page 68 of this book). Finally, as the author, I would like to emphasize that although some of the materials contained in this book may assist scholars in one way or another, however, this is a book with a core purpose to raise public awareness on the current issues regarding British foreign policy towards Africa - a book which I have chosen to write some parts of it in basic English to meet the reading and understanding needs of different backgrounds of readers. It means that the book is much more aimed at a wide general public rather than at the academic community in the normal sense.

    - Canadians and the Burma Campaign, 1941-1945
    av Robert Farquharson
    265,-

Seventy minutes before the attack on Pearl Harbour, the Japanese forces launched the invasion that in five months rolled unstoppably across the whole of Burma. In March 1944 the Japanese commander stood on the border to India, his eyes bright with the vision of marching in triumph into Delhi. What followed was the ten-week long siege of the border town of Imphal and the biggest defeat the Japanese Army ever suffered. Then the Allied forces turned on their ruthless enemy and drove him southward to the sea even more rapidly than he had advanced in 1942. By mid-June 1945 the Japanese Army in Burma was completely disorganized and destroyed. Of the 300,000 Japanese soldiers who swaggered into Burma, only 118,000 ever returned home.It is surprising how little the Burma Campaign is known in Canada, and even more surprising how little is known of Canadians involvement in it. In the air Canadians flew fighter planes that conquered Japan''s Oscars, Zekes and Zeroes and manned the bombers that broke the back of the River Kwae Railway. Two RCAF pilots salvaged the wreckage of a light plane and used it to rescue British soldiers wounded two hundred miles behind enemy lines. A Canadian was in charge of the mules for one of the Wingate''s Chindit columns. It was a Canadian pilot who discovered the Japanese fleet steaming toward Ceylon. A Canadian doctor laboured day and night to save the wounded in the flight from Burma and in the siege of Imphal and ended up as personal surgeon to the last Viceroy of India. The Burma Campaign was almost completely supplied by air and Canadian crews flew more than one third of those supply missions.Canadians were awarded more than 150 decorations for merit and bravery in Burma, including one Victoria Cross. Approximately 8000 Canadians served there and 500 of these gave their lives in the Burma Campaign. For Your Tomorrow tells the story of the Campaign and of the Canadians who fought in it.

Most of the poems in the book touch on feathers and fur, which symbolically represents the strength of the lion or leopard as opposed to the less aggressive force of birds, especially the chicken. But under natural circumstances, an eagle (a bird) may overcome a lion. Thus the force paradigm is further corroborating the fact that man's fortitude rather than brute force is what matters in life. Other poems largely deal with nature, a good number reflecting man's ordinary and extraordinary experiences, while others project man's interaction with nature.

Families are awkward and challenging at the best of times. Now throw in the fact that something else flows in the blood other than human genes, and the level of challenge rises to a higher degree. Also toss in the importance of keeping a secret all your life and that worlds depend on that secret not getting out. That is a tall order for Stella and puts a huge strain on any given situation. We all go through life on a learning curve, and that is even truer for Stella Blake. She's had to face up to some very hard truths about her and her family, and it has rocked her world. Finding out that magic is not only real but also that she is part of it and filled with it, and adding to that, she has to face up to the fact that she is part of an ancient prophecy as well and that is still hitting her hard. Stella continues to battle with herself the fact that she is magic and not human as she thought. She is going to need all her strength and her family to survive dangers involving magic that is planning on coming her way in the very near future. Her life as she knows it now will forever be changed. She will now have to rely on the incredible inner strength that she was born with. This is a challenge for her to deal with. Independence and trust-especially trust-are the most important things to Stella and will take all her cunning and strength to hold onto them. She is in for the ride of her life but doesn't know that yet. The world as she knew it will never be the same again. She is about to find out that wizards, warlocks, and witches are real and not just stories, and she has a part to play in all this magic.

What' s Your Jobbie is a rip roaring satire, rude and raucous, by turn, on all the people and Institutions who cause so much grief to people all over Ireland, who are trying their best to get on with living their day-to- day lives without too much interference. The politicians come in for the most satire, since they generate so much chaos in people' s everyday lives, while financial institutions, especially the vulture and cuckoo funds, come under equally withering attack for all their relentless greed at the expense of Ireland' s law abiding and straight living citizens and families. Other people and groups who are satirised include pen pushers ( literally) in local government, diplomats, post office closers, housing officials, bus scheme officials, fake brands' retailers and queue managers in hospitals. The list could go on and on and on, but the author has chosen to concentrate on a carefully selected bunch of targets, concluding with the well- named Minister for Gobbledegook, churning out totally obscure statements and promises that in actual fact, are worthless. The satire is unrelenting as the book reveals as much as it can about the real workings of those who rule over us, supposedly in our own best interests.

  • - With Our Story of the 760th Tank Battalion, WWII
    av John E. Krebs
    448,-

The first part of the book is a revised edition of To Rome and Beyond, self published in 1981 by Colonel John E. Krebs. The purpose was to have a combat battle record of B Company 760th Tank Battalion. The book was to be ready for the 1981 reunion in Denver, Colorado and was presented with great success although only 200 copies were available, orders were taken and more than 7000 copies were sold. At the Denver reunion the decision was made for the veteran members to begin gathering stories about their battle memories. Over the next several years the stories came in and Our Story of the 760th Tank Battalion WWII took shape. Colonel Helmuth Froeschle who was the last Battlion Commander as well as the Battlion Historian began putting Our Story together. The story was completed in 13 chapters in 2002, as I predicted previously, we now have a complete history of the 760th Tank Battalion. General Mark W. Clark wrote, "Your 760th Tank Battalion made a fine record for itself". Colonel Froeschle and I agreed these stories should be adapted and published in a book titled "To Rome and Beyond with Our Story of the 760th Tank Battalion WWII" This book is the factual account of firece fire fights with Tiger Tanks and the dreaded 88MM gun, daring patrols into enemy territory, momentary capture by German Soldiers during an artillery shelling, the anguish and sorrow of a comrade's death, the destruction of battle and the discomfort of the Italian winters with freezing rain and snow that turned battle terrain into a sea of mud.

  • - Exploring the Human Journey
    av Hillevi Ruumet
    197,-

I invite you to walk through some common pathways of your soul's human journey with me, not only with your mind, but also with your heart and your body. We will be guided by a unique "soul map," and we will walk through it together. The following description of enthusiastic responders to this "map" may fit you in some or even all ways:Open-minded and growth-oriented.Introspective and reflective.Inclined toward self-examination and inner work.Had some "mystical" experiences, perhaps not understood at the time.Value meaning and purpose in life.Environmentally concerned and socially inclusive.Capable of honest self-observation.Benevolent sense of humor.Spiritually exploratory and non-dogmatic.We all basically want to be healthy, happy and, whether we call it that or not, holy. If we reject the "holy" part we may be forgetting its core meaning of "whole" and equating it with a hypocritical "holier than thou" attitude we instinctively recoil from. Or perhaps we think of holiness as belonging to "enlightened beings" but not possible for us ordinary humans. Yet we are all potentially enlightened, and this is the experiential discovery of the psycho-spiritual journey. Spirit is our true identity and can never be lost, only obscured or forgotten. We call the personified form of this divine energy "soul" - embodied Spirit born into a specific time and place, a specific familial and social matrix, the holy meeting ground of Spirit and matter. We each have our own way to wholeness - holiness - our unique Path back to Spirit, which our essence has never left. It winds through the labyrinth of our individual lives, with many turnings and occasional dead ends. Yet when we encounter our authentic path, our heart recognizes it, and that is what this book is about.
