Reich-Ranickis Strategien waren darauf ausgerichtet, die feldspezifischen Kapitalien im Sinne Bourdieus zu akkumulieren. Hierdurch gelang es ihm, die informelle Struktur des literarischen Feldes der BRD in seiner Person zusammenlaufen zu lassen. Dass er sich hierbei vermehrt der Orthodoxie zuwandte, stellt ein für ihn symptomatisches Agieren dar.
Kanonbildung ist mit Literaturgeschichtsschreibung und der Auswahlproblematik eng verbunden. Stets muss über die Aufnahme oder den Verzicht auf Werke und Autoren eine Sinn- und Bedeutungszumessung im Kommunikationsfeld Literatur vorgenommen werden. Dieser Aufgabe stellte sich die Sektion 11 des Germanistentages 2013 in Kiel. Die hier versammelten Tagungsbeiträge lassen sich folgenden Themenfeldern zuordnen: Zunächst wird Grundsätzliches zur Kanontheorie und Kanonbildung besprochen. Anschließend finden Orte der Vermittlung Erwähnung: Dichterhäuser, Literaturmuseen, Universitäten, Schulen, Theater. Schließlich beschäftigen sich die Beiträge mit übersehenen Epochen und Literaturen: Kinder- und Jugendliteratur, Mittelhochdeutsche Literatur, Drittes Reich, DDR-Literaturgeschichte, Theaterlandschaft um 1800, Interkulturelle Literatur und vergessene Autor(inn)en.
