Stem Cells and Aging covers what is known about the effect of time and age on the basic units of life, which are the corresponding tissue-specific or adult stem cells. Even though the concept of stem cells was introduced nearly a century ago by Alexander Maximow, modern stem-cell research began in 1963 when James Till, Ernest McCullough and Lou Siminovitch established assays to detect hematopoietic stem cells. In fact, given the importance of the aging-associated diseases, scientists have developed a keen interest in understanding the aging process as they attempt to define the role of dysfunctional stem cells in the aging process. With an aging population worldwide, understanding these age-related stem cell changes at a basic biology level and at the level of their influences for regenerative medicine is of interest and importance. There is increasing evidence that the aging process can have much adverse effects on stem cells. In the modern era, one of the emerging fields in treating human diseases is stem cell research, as stem cells have the remarkable potential to treat a wide range of diseases. Nevertheless, understanding the molecular mechanism involved in aging and deterioration of stem cell function is crucial in developing effective new therapies for aging.
The Neuroscience of Depression: Genetics, Cell Biology, Neurology, Behaviour and Diet is a comprehensive reference to the aspects, features and effects of depression. This book provides readers with the behavior and psychopathological effects of depression, linking anxiety, anger and PSTD to depression. Readers are provided with a detailed outline of the genetic aspects of depression including synaptic genes and the genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of depression, followed by a thorough analysis of the neurological and imaging techniques used to study depression. This book also includes three full sections on the various effects of depression, including diet, nutrition and molecular and cellular effects. The Neuroscience of Depression: Genetics, Cell Biology, Neurology, Behaviour and Diet is the only resource for researchers and practitioners studying depression.
Nutrition and Bariatric Surgery discusses nutritional deficiencies and requirements that are often present with diverse bariatric techniques as main mechanisms for weight loss. In addition, the book presents strategies for early detection and supplementation in order to avoid the appearance of deficiency diseases. Finally, the summarizes protocols for the optimal nutritional management of patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgeons, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, general practitioners, nutritionists, dietitians and nurses specialized in nutritional management will find this resource especially useful.
A practical guide to the characteristics, principles of operation, and power potential of some of the most dominant renewable energy systems. It focuses on the engineering and design of alternative energy systems, eschewing discussions of policy and social issues and avoiding math-heavy treatments of underlying scientific background.
Introduces AutoCAD with detailed instructions, stripping away complexities to begin working in AutoCAD. This book explains the AutoCAD commands: all concepts are explained first in theory and then covered in detail. It includes drawing examples and exercises and running projects that the reader works on as he/she progresses through the chapters.
Connects enterprise strategy and data center investment, design and management. This book demonstrates how to leverage technology to manage the seemingly infinite amount of data. It includes chapters that offer management and technology solutions to effectively manage data through data centers.
The series Advances in Stem Cell Biology is a timely and expansive collection of comprehensive information and new discoveries in the field of stem cell biology. Recent Advances in iPSCs for Therapy, Volume 3 addresses the use of induced pluripotent stem cells for therapy of several disorders. The volume teaches the reader about the biology of induced pluripotent stem cells and their possible use as cell therapy. Remarkable progress has been made in the obtention of induced pluripotent stem cells and their differentiation into several cell types, tissues and organs using state-of-art techniques. This volume will cover what we know so far about the use of iPSCs for therapy of multiple diseases, such as: hair loss disorders, Parkinson¿s disease, Huntington¿s disease, ischemic stroke, Alzheimer¿s disease, Glaucoma, Optic Neuropathy, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Type 1 Diabetes, Heart Failure, liver diseases, infertility, Autoimmune Diseases, and more. The volume is written for researchers and scientists interested in cell therapy, stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, and organ transplantation and is contributed by world-renowned authors in the field.
Offers a modern take on the fundamental theory and applications relating to prediction and control of all major noise sources in aeropropulsion systems. This book includes detailed consideration of both the physics of aerodynamic noise generation in aero-engines and the related numerical prediction techniques.
Features coverage of technological breakthroughs, financing trends, workforce development issues, and comparative regional case studies in solar energy. This book examines six key drivers: a new culture of environmentalism; policy and markets; financing and venture capital; economics and cost-competitiveness; innovation; and labor.
Provides a guide to the developments in the field of optical fiber data communications. This title features case studies and 'How to...' demonstrations on a range of topics, including Optical Ethernet, next generation Internet, RDMA and Fiber Channel over Ethernet.
Provides diverse examples of implemented sustainable biomass research in Asia, highlighting the challenges faced by designers of new biomass production facilities and tips on how to develop approaches to overcome them.
Pulses are nutritionally diverse crops that can be successfully utilized as a food ingredient or a base for new product development. This reference brings together essential information on the processing technology of pulses. It addresses processing challenges relevant to legume and pulse grain processors.
Discussing how best to teach, how to design functional curricula, and how to support teachers in using science instruction materials, the book provides important information both to trainers of teachers, and to supervisors and policy makers in education. It offers research-based procedures for teaching students of various ability levels.
In physics, the classical vacuum of tranquil nothingness has been replaced by a quantum vacuum. This book describes the concept of the vacuum in quantum physics with emphasis on quantum electrodynamics. It elucidates the role of the vacuum electromagnetic field in spontaneous emission, the Lamb shift, van der Waals, and Casimir forces, and others.
