Spring had definitely arrived in the woodland, thick beautiful carpets of Bluebell flowers stretch as far as you could see under the trees, baby animals were being born, including an over adventurous chick who tries to fly and lands himself in trouble. The little Hedgehog is always there to help (although no one can help him from feeling lonely) and finds a mystery to solve in the woodland as well.

Hedgehogs usually sleep through the long winter months but this year one sleepy Hedgehog woke up unexpectedly. It was cold and strange snow stuff everywhere but more importantly there was something special in the air, something he had never seen before - Christmas. Join the Hedgehog as he travels through the woods meeting friends and discovering more about this wonderful season.Reviews Reviewed by Paul Zietsman for Readers' Favorite 5 starsThe Christmas Hedgehog: Tales from the Bluebell Woods by Ian Humpheryes is a story for young children that is both well-written and expertly illustrated. Hedgehog wakes up in winter, and whilst he should actually still be in hibernation, it feels warmer than usual, and something feels peculiar about this specific time. Hedgehog decides to ask his other animal friends if they are experiencing the same thing. On his walk through the woodland, he stops by his friends, which include Wood Mouse, Mole, Rabbit, Badger, and others, to find out what is going on. Hedgehog learns from them that this particular time of year is called Christmas and that it is a time for sharing, giving, kindness, and coming together. Hedgehog experiences his first Christmas ever, and when Christmas is finished, he goes back to his winter sleep and has pleasant dreams about Christmas and his good friends in the woodland. At first glance, I thought that the writing would have to be really good to keep up with the bright, vivid, and exquisite illustrations, and I was not disappointed. The Christmas Hedgehog piqued my imagination with a plot that is fun, adventurous, magical, and meaningful. It teaches children kindness and generosity, and, at the same time, more about hedgehogs, including their diet, how they are nocturnal, and how they hibernate in winter, among other interesting facts. Ian Humpheryes has put together a cast of colorful characters, an adventurous story, and beautiful illustrations that should be enjoyable for both children and parents-a winner in all departments and a wholesome choice for discerning parents. Lynne on Goodreads wroteJanuary 25, 2024Hedgehogs usually go to sleep in the autumn and don't wake up until spring. They have to eat plenty of food while they are awake to be able to sleep that long. The weather was warmer than usual white flakes were falling from the sky. Hedgehog has never seensnow before. Hedgehog was never awake Christmas time so he wanted to find out more about it.So he went about to go see his friends. I don't want to spoil it but you will find out soon why he is called the Christmas Hedgehog. What a great story very creative. I would give this book easily 10 stars I enjoyed reading it. It is the perfect bedtime story for your little ones. I will buy several copies to give out.

Somewhere Between the Land and the Sea - A Problem with BoatsImagine you are living in a rockpool that is uncovered by the sea twice a day. Here you will meet lots of different animals that the sea brings in, sometimes dangers and don't forget to watch out for the greedy seagulls! This book shows the damage that boats can do to marine life that often goes unnoticed and teaches some good behaviours for when you explore rockpools. At the end of each book, there is a page for adults to share with the readers that produce interesting facts about the animals or provide more depth on the issue depicted on the story.I am a marine biologist working for over 40 years in this field and have a deep love and understanding for the animals and plants of our oceans. I spent much of my childhood 'rock-pooling' and this led me onto a lifelong career protecting and learning about the sea and its inhabitants. Maybe one child reading these books will feel inspired to learn more and explore the sea for themselves thus setting them on to a fantastic journey of discovery.

Between the land and the sea is a series of picture story books for children where each story introduces new animals found in a rockpool that is uncovered every day by the tide. The sea leaves behind new objects or animals that provide a challenge for the rockpool inhabitants to solve or help with. The first story introduces two common rockpool creatures that children will typically find when they explore rockpools themselves. The story concerns a flatfish stranded in the rock pool who needs help to hide from the Seagulls and the dangers represented by discarded fishing nets to marine life. The author is a marine biologist who gained his love of the oceans from exploring as a child the rockpools of his local beach. Educating the next generation to protect and to love this special place is as important to him as the protection he works towards giving marine life in his current employment. At the end of each book, there is a page for adults to share with the readers that produce interesting facts about the animals or provide more depth on the issue depicted on the story.
