Intelligent, ambitious and exotically pretty, Farideh Darvish is an investigative journalist for a leading financial news magazine. She transfers to the Washington bureau in search of her first major story and soon crosses paths with Catherine Johnson. Trading leads and information, the two women become friends as they work together to unravel the tangled web of money, influence and power controlled by Nelson Faraday, but as they accumulate more evidence, people close to each of them are killed. In a race against time, they come to understand that the pursuit of truth is dangerous-and often quite lonely.
Catherine Johnson is intelligent, articulate, well-connected and beautiful, but when she graduates at the top of her elite law school class, she turns her back on a promising Wall Street career to work for the Department of Justice in the Civil Rights Division. In her first major case, she stumbles into a tangled web of powerful and often violent forces who will stop at nothing - including murder - to see her fail.
