Om Fighting is Like a Wife
Fighting is Like a Wife is a Greek tragedy told as a boxing story. The poems speak from three different perspectives: Bobby’s, the narrator (or chorus in the Greek tradition), and—importantly—Valorie’s. While Bobby gained tremendous fame, not much is known about Valorie, and in this collection Eloisa gives her a voice and a story of her own. The poems in Bobby’s voice are are manipulations of direct quotes from the boxer gathered through extensive research, both written and video.
The title of the book comes from a profile of the boxer titled "Fighting Is Like a Wife," by Ralph Wiley for Sports Illustrated, July 11, 1983.
Exquisite, inventive visual poetry that makes for a very interactive reading experience.
In the vein of contemporary poets Elizabeth Alexander, Adrian Matejka, and Gabrielle Calvocoressi.
