Fear the Witch Kind

After witnessing a bloody occult murder in the fields behind his subdivision, Lars is sent by his dad to rendezvous with an aunt he's never met who has very weird powers -- but Lars is almost killed before they can meet. At age sixteen, Lars suddenly has deadly enemies -- the Witch Kind -- a powerful secret cult with members in many places who practice the darkest kind of Magic. Lars was never a believer in Magic, but now he must learn a lot about it very quickly in order to survive. Lars learns from Aunt Helen that he comes from a Magical family, which his parents kept a secret, and she introduces him to new friends, Seers and Changers, each with different kinds of Magical knowledge. Lars's new friends will give him a crash course in Magical spells, while also teaching him how to discover magical powers he never knew he had. In the process, he meets a lively shape-changing girl who quickly becomes very fond of him. Lars learns that his dad has suddenly been confined to a mental institution. He must return to his little commuter town, Fairchance, to try and find out what has happened to his dad. Lars and Helen return to Fairchance and immediately come under attack from The Witch Kind, a number of whom are leaders of his community. By chance, he saves the life of the daughter of one of the cultists --but the body count is rising, and the Witch Kind is planning a ritual that will open a door to demonic evil on a grand scale. Lars must discover the cult's secret meeting place, and the identity of their leader in Fairchance and put the Witch Kind out of business. If he can't he's doomed, and an ancient evil will be unleashed on the world.
