Ting, an employee at a large Chinese cigarette factory, must weave through the obstacles presented by modern day communism and corruption. She dreams of escaping the polluted and hopeless city of Huangyan to start anew in a wealthy metropolis. Harry is an old American alcoholic that arrives in Shanghai to teach English at the "Happy Family English School." He encounters Chinese culture at its most absurd and American culture at its most degenerated, while dealing with a recent divorce.
