Six-year-old Bogdan cannot understand the word war, but he knows that it doesn't mean anything good. Difficult times are coming for him and his family living in Kovel-all of them may be soon deported to Siberia. On New Year's Eve 1939, the four of them decide to make an illegal crossing of the River Bug and start a new life in a faraway, unknown town. Years of uncertain future, poverty, and hard work are awaiting them. But they believe that as long as they are together, they can endure anything that fate could bring.
