Efterfølgende var han med til at gennemføre overgangen fra stum- til talefilm hos A/S Palladium Film, inden han debuterede som spillefilmsinstruktør i en alder af bare 24 år, og sideløbende stod for et pionerarbejde inden for dansk reklamefilm. Selvom Lau Lauritzen jun. aldrig havde stået på en teaterscene, medvirkede han i en række film som skuespiller, og blev i 1930’erne en af landets mest populære filmhelte. I de tidlige år hos Palladium Film og efter etableringen af ASA Film, var Lau Lauritzen jun. med til at skabe den folkelige tradition inden for dansk underholdningsfilm, og medvirkede sideløbende til en bølge af mere alvorlige film under besættelsen, hvor ASA lagde sig i spidsen af den danske filmproduktion. Besættelsen var samtidig en tid, hvor ASA bevægede sig ud i en farlig balancegang mellem samarbejdspolitik og modstandskamp. I sit virke indenfor dansk film samarbejdede Lau Lauritzen jun. med personligheder som Alice O’Fredericks, Ib Schønberg, Poul Reichhardt, Bodil Ipsen og Lisbeth Movin, som han giftede sig med. Samt filmproducenterne Svend Nielsen, John Olsen, Henning Karmark og Aage Stentoft.
