  • - Shanghai History, Tourism, Business Travel, and Vacation Guide
    av Roman Reynolds
    378,-

Shanghai, China. Shanghai History, Tourism, Business Travel, and Vacation Guide. Shanghai is home to the world's second-tallest tower and a host of other neck-craning colossi. But it's not all sky-scraping razzmatazz. Beyond the crisply cool veneer of the modern city typified by Pudong, you can lift the lid to a treasure chest of architectural styles. The city's period of greatest cosmopolitan excess the 1920s and 1930s left the city with pristine examples of art deco buildings, most of which survived the 20th-century vicissitudes assailing Shanghai. And there's more: from Jesuit cathedrals, Jewish synagogues and Buddhist temples to home-grown longtang (laneway) and shíkùmén (stone gate) housing, Shanghai's architectural heritage is like none other. Cuisine: Thirty years ago Shanghai's dour restaurant scene was all tin trays and scowling waiting staff, with international food confined to the dining rooms of 'exclusive' hotels. Today the mouth-watering restaurant scene is varied, exciting and up to the minute and Shanghai has its own Michelin dining guide in 2017, proving just how far the city has come. Food is the hub of Chinese social life. It's over a meal that people catch up with friends, celebrate and clinch business deals, and spend hard-earned cash. Some of your best memories of the city could be culinary, so do as the Shanghainese do and make a meal of it. Shopping: Bearing in mind that Chinese shoppers constitute up to 47% of the global luxury-goods market, shopping is rarely done in half-measures in Shanghai. Retail therapy is one way of spending new money and the Shanghainese aren't called'little capitalists') by the rest of China for nothing, especially at the luxury end of things. But it's not all Prada, Gucci and Burberry. There are pop-up boutiques, bustling markets, cool vintage shops and young designer outlets. Beyond clothing you're also spoiled for choice, whether you're in the market for antiques, ceramics, art, Tibetan jewellery...whatever is on your shopping list. Entertainment & the Arts: Běijīng often hogs the limelight as China's cultural nexus but, for what is essentially a town of wheelers and dealers, Shanghai is surprisingly creative. Many art galleries are exciting, offering a window onto contemporary Chinese concerns, while nightlife options have exploded. Acrobatics shows are always a favourite and you might grab the chance to catch some Chinese opera. Shanghai's music and club scene is vibrant: from unpretentious jazz and indie venues to all-night hip-hop and electro dance parties, the city swings with the best of them.

  • - The Historical Information and Environment Guide
    av Liam Richards
    379,-

Wales Culture. The Historical Information and Environment Guide. Wales is a fascinating country that holds tightly to its culture and traditions, and offers the visitor great scenery, dining and entertainment. The first sign that Wales a small country on the west coast of Great Britain is different from its neighbors is its flag. A red dragon, proudly strutting over a green and white background, is an apt image for a country where rolling green, sheep-dotted hills cover the landscape and locals hold tightly to ancient culture and traditions. Another sign of the difference between Wales and England is noticeable immediately upon crossing the River Severn that forms part of the border between the two and it's quite literally a sign. Wales is officially bilingual and all road signs are in both Welsh and English; the Welsh language is still spoken, too, and you'll be greeted with "bore da" as often as "good morning." Wales is often overlooked by travelers, but with a culture, language, and cuisine of its own, it's an exciting destination in its own right or well worth a detour from London. Thanks to the country's small size, it's easy to tour its west and south corners in just a few days. The capital of Wales, Cardiff (Caerdydd in Welsh), is just 2.5 hours from London by train .The city's heart is Cardiff Castle (cardiffcastle.com), built over the centuries and now a mishmash of styles. The walls are remnants from the Roman occupation that ended in the 5th century, the ruined stone keep was built by invading Normans 700 years later, and the main building is a 19th-century Victorian reconstruction of a medieval castle (designed by William Burgess), complete with million-dollar rooms, such as the Arab Room (also known as the Harem Room), which features hand-tiled mosaics and gold-leaf paint. It would cost more than $10 million to create the same room today. In 1947, Cardiff Castle was officially given to the people of Cardiff. Now, all Cardiff citizens have free access; for visitors, the cost to explore the castle's opulent rooms and take in the view from the top of the keep is £12 (about $19). Cardiff's most visited attraction is a more recent addition: the Wales Millennium Centre (wmc.org.uk), which opened in 2009. It contains the largest theater in Europe and has quickly become one of the top performing arts centers in the UK. Its exterior is dominated by a huge copper dome on the front and Welsh slate on the side, making it look both futuristic and industrial. The façade is inscribed with phrases in Welsh (translation: "Creating truth like glass from the furnace of creation") and English ("In these stones, horizons sing") that hint to its mission to bring the best of the world to Wales, and showcase the best of Wales to the world.

  • - Travel Guide
    av Jesse Russell
    378,-

Israel Travel Guide. Israel has always been an alluring destination. From biblical times to present day, this slice of holy land in the Middle East has long attracted visitors. It has also attracted turmoil, as Israel has always been a politically sensitive and controversial country. Nevertheless, its appeal for visitors is enormous and the day-to-day issues facing residents have little effect on those coming to appreciate its astounding historic relics, impressive religious sites and exquisite natural beauty. Home to the Mount of Olives, the Sea of Galilee and the ancient port of Jaffa, it's hard to go anywhere in Israel without stumbling upon a place of religious significance. But nothing can compare to the holy city of Jerusalem. Sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians alike, this ancient metropolis is claimed by both Israel and Palestine and its status remains one of the core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Jerusalem's stunning skyline is a complete contrast to the touchy political landscape, with its beautiful bell towers, striking minarets and the golden dome of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Split into Arabic, Jewish and Christian quarters, this cultural melting pot translates into a sumptuous culinary scene, as well as a feast for the eyes and experiences. Visually, Tel Aviv seems a world away from Jerusalem. Israel's commercial and political heart is a city of glistening skyscrapers, thronging streets and sandy beaches; of contemporary art galleries, excellent restaurants and hedonistic inhabitants. Quite a contrast, then, to neighbouring Jaffa, a historic port city of sprawling markets, cobbled docks and crumbling city walls. This juxtaposition of old and new is typical in Israel, where ancient cities like Nazareth and Acre exist alongside modern metropolises such as Haifa (home to the Baha'i Gardens) and Eilat (a beach oasis unlike any other). Israel's landscapes are equally diverse. Mountains, deserts and fertile valleys can all be found in this sliver of the Middle East, while the Dead Sea, Red Sea, Sea of Galilee and Mediterranean coastlines offer everything from unique geological spectacles to seaside holiday resorts. If you can read beyond the headlines and see past the politics, you will find a beautiful and beguiling nation quite unlike anywhere else on Earth.

  • - The Nigerian Vigilante Life in Pictures
    av Orlando Andy Wilson
    627,-

The vigilante's job is to protect their communities and they fill in the gaps where the police do not or will not operate. Many vigilante groups provide security services for local business and the like and there is often friction between them and the police and the military. The police and the military are part of the Federal government, and the vigilantes have no official powers apart from working in the interests of their communities. In a society with virtually no government social support and where government workers can go months without being paid, people have to put themselves, their families, homes, and communities first. Why care about a rich country that does not care for them? If a vigilante was injured, then who would pay his medical bills and feed him and his family if he could not work? If a man was killed, then would look after his family? In reality there are no heroes, they are quickly forgotten, and usually those who sacrifice themselves for others end up destroying their own lives and leave behind families to face financial hardship, poverty, and exploitation. The photos in this book not only show the vigilantes but also the environments and communities they lived and worked in. The lives of most people in rural Nigerian and Africa in general are hard when compared with the lives of those in the United States or Western Europe. But are they really hard or just the way things are meant to be? Many of these communities have been in existence for hundreds if not thousands of years... They are mostly self-sufficient and still harbor strong community and moral values. We were always welcomed and usually fed by people who from a United States or Western Europe context had little or nothing to offer, but what they had they shared with pleasure... So, I hope the photos in this book will give you an insight into the real Nigeria. For myself I can still smell the air, the earth, the bush, and feel the cool water of the rivers and the raw energy which is Africa. As you look at those in the pictures, some of whom are passed to another world, you can see pain, sweat, determination and some humor... What you're looking at is life and people living it to the best of their abilities... I am sure this is a different culture from which most of you are used to, and it's also a colorful and rich culture where people appreciate and celebrate the value of life and being alive to the fullest. The photos in this book are in no particular order and show how we went from training in the bush to back to Owerri on virtually a daily basis for the 5 months I was working this project. Every day was different with its own unique highs and lows and the whole time was quite a roller coaster, a phrase I can use to describe many parts of my life... I have included some photos that are blurred, to me these are relevant as when you are active and constantly moving you can miss the small details of people and locations, and you just remember you were once there... Orlando "Andy" Wilson

During her travels to Malta, an older man tried to give her some advice based on his own experience living on the island since he was a young boy. She was not sure if she should talk to the stranger but was interested in his advice. When traveling to some places she was wary to talk to locals because she was afraid that they weren't being genuine. Through her travels, Lisa learned how much locals had to share with tourists. Lisa created the Greater Than a Tourist book series to help connect people with locals. A topic that locals are very passionate about sharing.
