""Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes, Egypt's opulent New Kingdom capital. It encompasses the spectacular temples of Luxor and Karnak on the east bank of the Nile, and on the west bank the vast necropolis, which includes the Colossi of Memnon, the famed Ramesseum, Queen Hatshepsut's magnificent funerary temple, and the Valley of the Kings, riddled with royal tombs, among them the fabled resting place of Tutankhamun. The splendor and profusion of pharaonic monuments at Luxor justifies its reputation as the greatest outdoor museum in the world. Reaching beyond Luxor, this book also covers all the major sites of Upper Egypt, including Abydos, Dendera, Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo. Special attention is given to Aswan, one of the most beautiful places in Egypt, with its nearby island temple of Isis at Philae. The climax of this informed and richly illustrated book comes with the remarkable temples at Abu Simbel, with their colossal figures of Ramesses II and his lovely wife Nefertari cut from the living rock. This edition, now fully revised and updated by leading Egyptologist Aidan Dodson, and presented in a brand new design and easily portable format, is the perfect companion for visitors to Upper Egypt's famed sites and monuments.""--

With this fourth edition of the Atlas des Régions Naturelles, Eric Tabuchi and Nelly Monnier continue their long-term project launched in 2017: the comprehensive documentation of the 450 natural regions - or 'pays' (lands) - composing the French territory. This exceptional photographic adventure is slated to unfold over several years, with one publication every six months. Traversing these small geographical and cultural entities, some fallen into oblivion following the administrative division of the country, the duo collects visual elements that embody the essence of a region. They comingle man-made particularities- traditional architecture, toponyms, local tastes, historical traces- and natural features, such as relief, landscapes, colours, vegetation, etc. With 384 pages and more than 500 images, theAtlas des Régions Naturelles Vol. 4 rassembles twelve "portraits" of natural regions, punctuated by four themes. Like the previous editions, the volume is accompanied by a map serving as an index at the back of the book. Fourth volume's chapiters:Argonne, Bresse bourguignonne, Champagne berrichonne, Écussons, Crau, Flandre maritime, Grand Ried, Garage, Minervois, Perthois, Plateau de Saint-André, Silos, Saintonge romane, Vallespir, Velay, Tours Eiffel.
For several years, Samuel Gratacap has been visiting territories that bear the traces of a precarious, temporary occupation, of a passage and of a contemporary history: that of the paths of exile on the Mediterranean rim. Bilateral echoes the presence - real or suggested - of exiles on the French-Italian border, and the question of their passage through this transalpine sector. It is also a work on the landscape, on both sides of the border, the one that separates and unites us in turn. Samuel Gratacap tried to put his eyes on it and to listen to the people he met, in an effort to criticize the media images and the traditional representations that are proposed.
Border closures, flight cancellations, stay-at-home orders; a collective populace clinging to news broadcasts, online analysis, social media, and hearsay. Few times in our living memory had language - however fragmented, misinformed, measured or rhetorical - carried such weight. The early iterations of Mountain of Salt, Bindi Vora's expansive series of text-based collage works, began to take form in this very context. Comprising found photographs and digital shape collages, each married to phrases and statements appropriated from news articles, press conferences, and social media, the 371-strong series traces the interweaving social, political and ideological arcs of the early phases of the pandemic, the post-Brexit era, and Black Lives Matter, landing squarely on the potency of language. 'I, like many others, became acutely aware of the landscape in which we were living in, where everything felt amplified,' says Vora. 'Clinging to the news for updates, statistics and curves ... for me it highlighted the way words and speech have a physical presence, bearing upon us and carrying weight.'Through a cacophony of visual and textual fragments, this book - the London-based artist's first with Perimeter Editions - revels in the tension between the micro and macro, the individual and collective, and the personal and political, teasing out and making connections between the individual events and linguistic armatures that come to build broader historical eras and movements. The outcomes are incisive, sober, witty, and wry, magnifying language's ability to both define and dispel the collective mood. Drowning in a morass of information, phrases, photographs, infographics, throwaway lines, and revolutionary dictums, Vora's visually poetic works echo the unfixed contemporary state. A place where alarm, agitation, desensitisation, and bemusement seem to intersect. Where words - free of hierarchy, nuance, and context - prove as absurd as they are critical. Mountain of Salt reads as a resolve to use them with great care.
Through a series of portraits taken of strangers in 2022, lit by Portland's trademark overcast skies, Sky Wilson constructs a vague sketch of an unremarkable yet familiar place, where longing and isolation share the same space. Sky Wilson is a photographer who explores the subtle details of the ordinary and peripheral. Born in South Korea, he has an intuitive approach to his subjects (strangers) and he finds sentimental beauty in the inconsequential moments of everyday life. He specialises in portraiture and is based in Portland, Oregon. 'EUROPA?' is a collaboration between a Spanish photographer and a British writer; combining photography and fiction to examine the experiences of modern European migrants. Ignacio Evangelista's haunting photographic series 'After Schengen' shows abandoned and disused European border crossings following 1985's Schengen Agreement... writer Chris Burkham saw these photos in the UK's Independent on Sunday newspaper, and the result is 'EUROPA?'; a hybrid collection of images and fiction. Burkham's short stories ask who makes these journeys after-Schengen - and peoples Evangelista's images with characters and their narratives that explore possibility, fear, hope and unease; playing on the notion of perpetual flux that is a central part of the European experiment.

«Paul Butler¿s monograph is a wonderful illustration of how a visual reading of McGahern can reveal previously undiscovered aspects of the writer¿s aesthetic approach. ¿The Deep Well of Want¿ of the title is an expression that captures the pain and hurt at the core of the life journey of both writer and photographer. Paul¿s exquisite photos allow us a special entry into ¿McGahern Land¿, whose landscape and people nurtured the writer¿s creative inspiration. This indispensable study will deepen McGahern readers¿ understanding of what lies at the core of his artistic quest.»(Eamon Maher, TU Dublin)This book represents a unique visualisation of the world of Irish writer John McGahern through his words and the imagery of artist Paul Butler. Traumatic events in the lives of both McGahern and Butler shaped their paths, creating a want to write in McGahern and a want to create imagery in Butler. Butler explores the difficult and complex childhood that the two shared, and through a series of beautiful images that he himself has created in McGahern¿s own part of Ireland, he draws parallels between them and, as Eamonn Wall says in his Preface, produces a rich and life-affirming appreciation of literature, art and imagery.
Air rescue is a modern technological advancement that delivers power and flexibility to incredibley difficult tasks!Since around 400 BC, Chinese children have played with bamboo flying toys. It was not until the early 1480s, when Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci created a design for an "aerial screw", but In 1942, the Sikorsky R-4 became the first helicopter to reach full-scale production. Fixed wing aircraft are also used as ambulances and fire fighting vehicles.Today, rescue vehicles are technologically highly developed with specialized equipment and specially trained paramedics to keep people alive until they can get care at a hospital. We honor all service members on Memorial Day (last Monday of May) and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.
(Please scroll down for english version) Kathrin Linkersdorffs (*1966) faszinierende großformatigen Arbeiten bewegen sich zwi- schen Kunst und Wissenschaft. Plants or bacteria comprise the visual reference point in her pictures, but it is not simply a matter of depicting them. Each image is a carefully selected, artistically staged image of the organic process of decay. The reference to Japanese wabi-sabi gives her works a dimension that transcends the visible. Wabi-sabi is a traditional aesthetic concept, according to which beauty implies the acceptance of imperfection, incompleteness, and transience.
In "Broken Memories" Andréas Lang explores the themes of recollection and history in Turkey. In a series of photographs and videos, he reflects on the disappearance, the discontinuity and the multiple layers of historical writings as well as the overwriting that leaves visible traces of a collective memory long since rendered invisible. He focuses on the contemporary approach to history, but especially on places with links to the later Ottoman Empire, the Armenian heritage and the 1915 genocide. Lang describes his work as visual archaeology that exposes the many layers of history and of mythology, as well as of the present day.

Ars Electronica 2023 is dedicated to the complex questions of truth and the concept of ownership in this digital age. In doing so, the festival navigates the central questions of our time. The focus is on how our perception of "authentic" and "original" is being transformed and whether truth can be owned, and how this relates to digitalization and the rapidly developing performance of artificial intelligence. How can the achievements of a tool that is so much based on the globally collective "raw material" of knowledge and creativity be made accessible to everyone and be harnessed to the benefit of all? This comprehensive volume brings together the works of artists, scientists, developers, designers, entrepreneurs and activists from around the world and delves deep into the themes of the festival, offering insights, perspectives, and thought-provoking content that reflect on the intersection of art, technology, and society.
Jeewi Lee is interested in all the traces-the intimate imprints and distinctive markings-that we leave behind and that inhabit the spaces surrounding us. Abstract compositions of rescued stories, worn-out pavements and stripped down wallpapers, cut out floors, grains of sand that have traveled millions of years around the world, coffee stains or burnt wood. These traces, both human and historical, become vessels of stories and memories, inscribed on various materials, bearing witness to the past, present, and future. This publication offers a comprehensive exploration of the manifold tracings of the Berlin-based Korean artist over the past decade. It provides insight into her highly conceptual way of working and unveils previously unseen documentation of her deeply personal process of creation.JEEWI LEE (*1987, Seoul) is a Berlin-based South Korean-German artist. She studied painting at the Berlin University of the Arts and at Hunter College University in New York, graduating in 2014 with a master in fine arts and since 2018 holds an MFA from the postgraduate program Art in Context. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses site-specific installations and interventions, video and image series that predominantly deal with traces that question our visual perception, while also reflecting their own production process.
