    386,-

An incredible collection of Yves Saint Laurent’s designs, beautifully captured by the leading fashion photographers of the 20th centuryYves Saint Laurent: Icons of Fashion Design & Photography is a gorgeous homage to the uncrowned king of haute couture. Originally published in 1988, the book traces the success of Saint Laurent’s haute couture and ready-to-wear designs from 1962 to 1988 through the lens of the world’s leading fashion photographers, including Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, William Klein, and more. Inside, 135 photographs document Saint Laurent’s groundbreaking designs worn by the most beautiful women of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s: Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, Mounia, and Veruschka. Saint Laurent was equipped with an infallible instinct for reading the aesthetic signs of the times, and this enabled him to have a profound effect on fashion. With an introduction by Marguerite Duras, this classic volume documents Saint Laurent’s ever-evolving artistry and the combined efforts of the world’s most talented fashion photographers, and is as beautiful and rewarding as one of Saint Laurent’s creations.

Towards the end of her life, Dorothea Lange (American, 1895-1965) remarked that "all photographs-not only those that are so-called 'documentary,' and every photograph really is documentary and belongs in some place, has a place in history-can be fortified by words." Though Lange's career is widely heralded, this connection between words and pictures has received scant attention. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this catalogue provides a fresh approach to some of her best-known and beloved photographs, highlighting the ways in which these images first circulated in magazines, government reports, books, etc. An introductory text by curator Sarah Hermanson Meister will be followed by plates organized according to "words" from a variety of sources that expand our understanding of the photographs. The featured photographs will range from Lange's first engagement with documentary photography in San Francisco in the early-mid 1930s, including her iconic White Angel Breadline (1933), to landmark photographs she made for the Resettlement Administration (later the Farm Security Administration) such as Migrant Mother (1936), powerful photographs made during World War II in California's internment camps for Japanese-Americans, major photo-essays published in Life magazine on Mormon communities in Utah (in 1954) and County Clare, Ireland (in 1955), and quietly damning photographs made in the Berryessa Valley in 1956-57, before the region was flooded by the construction of a dam intended to address California's chronic water shortages. Exhibition opens December 2019.

    - Authenticity, Architecture and the Built Heritage
av J ED ET AL BOLD
    394,-

Notions of authenticity lie at the heart of many questions about heritage and identity in the built environment. These questions are most pertinent when buildings have been destroyed in disaster or war, and the built fabric is being reconstructed to reinstate traditional or historic appearances in place of what was lost. Authentic Reconstruction examines this idea of reconstruction, using it as a prompt to examine a range of deeper issues on heritage and the built environment. From post-WWII reconstruction programmes through to the rebuilding of historic cultural landscapes lost in natural disasters, this collection of essays by heritage specialists provides a wide range of case-studies and discussions. Each presents responses to crises and lessons learned, in order to extrapolate general guidelines for future actions by politicians, architects and planners in reconstructing buildings. The book also looks beyond disaster and war, noting how authenticity bears on political intentions and image building, exploring how reconstruction is used to tell a political or historical story, so conditioning the ways in which the built environment is perceived and appreciated by its users. This is not just about the buildings as bricks and mortar, but about perceptions of identity and the social and historical values which buildings and spaces embody for a richly diverse population. This book will be valuable to all who are concerned with heritage as practitioners or consumers, particularly those concerned with reconstruction and the creation of authentic places and experiences: architects, architectural historians, town planners, preservationists, conservationists, and those involved in heritage management and material culture.

  • - 50 Stories about 50 Things

    298,-

Iconic Designs is a beautifully designed and illustrated guide to fifty classic 'things' - designs that we find in the city, in our homes and offices, on page and screen, and in our everyday lives. In her introduction, Grace Lees-Maffei explores what makes a design 'iconic', and fifty essays by leading design and cultural critics tell the story of each iconic 'thing', its innovative and unique qualities, and its journey to classic status. Subjects range from the late 19th century to the present day, and include the Sydney Opera House, the Post-It Note, Coco Chanel's classic suit, the Sony Walkman(TM), Hello Kitty(TM), the typeface Helvetica, the Ford Model T, Harry Beck's diagrammatic map of the London Underground and the Apple iMac G3. This handsome volume provides a treasure trove of 'stories' that will shed new light on the iconic designs that we use without thinking, aspire to possess, love or hate (or love to hate) and which form part of the fabric of our everyday lives.

  • - Battle and Siege Scenes in Detail from Geisberg's German Single Sheet Woodcuts
    av Marion McNealy
    561,-

The wars of the 16th century were different from the isolated conflicts of the 15th century, spanning the continent and engaging many different parties at the same time. Emperors Maximilian I and Charles V were challenged on many fronts, externally by the Swiss, French, and Ottoman Turks, along with internal conflicts between the German princes and their people. It was a time of uprisings and invasions, of broken treaties and of instability, religious reformation and rebellions. Some of these conflicts were recorded in woodcut form, and published shortly after they happened. These woodcuts show the Landsknecht and their opponents in action, instead the more commonly seen individual depictions. The book contains scenes from the battles and sieges depicted in the German single sheet woodcuts: Pavia, Vienna, Budapest, and Münster… these along with many others, are all presented as a whole, then each individual plate, and pages of details, magnified for better viewing. There is also a brief description of the battle, and an explanation of the scenes in the woodcuts.

The origins of the work by one of the most celebrated living artists in Latin America. Fernando Botero is the best known Colombian artist of all times. His work is found in many international collections and is also known to be very well represented in several important donations he himself has made to his nation. There is no part of the world where people are not familiar with his name and recognize his distinctive artistic language, characterized by the devotion to form and volume found in figurative works which have placed themes drawn from Latin America, Colombia and his native Department (State) of Antioquia in the visual repertory of the history of world art. Despite his worldwide recognition, the truth is that, in many senses, Botero is an unknown artist. There is a great analytical void about his career which has yet to be filled and above all, would vindicate his merits in historical terms as a painter in search of an identity of his own. It seems strange that even after six decades during which one of the most profilic and original artists of Latin America has produced a staggering abundance of works, there are few who have inquired into the origin of his distinctive approach to volume and color.

A quiet revolution in painting that seeks to overturn fast-paced art productionBritish curator and writer Martin Herbert brings together in this volume the works of 19 contemporary painters that share a common stance that has come to be identified as "slow painting," referring both to its creation and its apprehension by the viewer. Moving from representation to abstraction, these artists insist on the phenomenological experience, creating works that reveal themselves slowly, as a riposte to the contemporary tendency toward an art that is "fast," quickly made and then consumed. With 50 illustrations, Slow Painting includes an essay and curatorial overview by Martin Herbert and round-table interview with Hettie Judah. Artists include: Darren Almond, Athanasios Argianas, Michael Armitage, Gareth Cadwallader, Varda Caivano, Lubaina Himid, Paul Housley, Merlin James, Allison Katz, Simon Ling, Lucy McKenzie, Mairead O'hEocha, Yelena Popova, Carol Rhodes, Sherman Mern Tat Sam, Benjamin Senior, Michael Simpson, Tim Stoner and Caragh Thuring.

Prefabricated housing is a pressing issue¿-¿for those looking for affordable homes as well as for refugees fleeing wars or natural disasters. Along with politicians, architects were caught unawares by the recent waves of migration due to the wars in both Ukraine (2022) and Syria (2015). However, are tent cities and containers the best solution for cheap, dignified, and quickly assembled accommodation for displaced persons? This challenging situation, along with the changing urban landscape, with its ever-diminishing space, calls into question existing standards in relation to serial housing. Bold and unconventional ideas are called for if architects are to offer high-quality solutions. From eccentric experiments all the way to projects that have already been realised, international design teams present their work between the twin poles of unconventional developments and life-saving shelters in this volume spanning more than 250 pages. Introduced with articles on design principles, and divided into three sections according to the form the structures take when delivered - cuboid, panels and custom units - the book covers everything from playful follies to architectural constructions for the homeless and outpatient medical stations which offer a response to social problems and space shortages. The text, photographs and plans put forward ideas as to how more can be done than the mere assembling of containers. Should we not first consider notions bordering on the absurd in order to come up with workable solutions for housing today?
