  • - My Journey from Rwanda to South Africa: A Life Turned Upside Down
    av Pancras Musabyimana Malani
    145,-

On 1 October, 1990 a group of armed rebellion invaded Rwanda from Uganda. The group was quick to be identified as the Rwandan refugees who decided to come back home by the barrel of the gun. After almost 4 years of bitter fighting and negotiations with the Rwandan government, the war culminated into a genocide committed between April and July 1994. As a result, more than one million of Rwandans, mostly from Tutsi ethnic group, were savagely killed while up to three millions of mostly Hutu ran en masse into exile in neighbouring countries. I was one of them. While many refugees were forced to return to Rwanda from their refugee camps in Tanzania and Zaire, I trekked down the continent in search of both protection and greener pastures. This book narrates the where, the what and the how of major experiences of my journey from the minute I left my remote village in Rwanda in June 1994 until I settled down in South Africa in 1999 to start a new life. It also highlights the multifaceted obstacles that refugees and immigrants are faced with in adapting to a complete new and harsh environment.

  • - Reflections on Growing Up in the Child Welfare System
    av Cody Murrell
    250

In Canada, youth from the child welfare system are 200 times more likely to become homeless, 60 times more likely to become victims of sex trafficking, and 5 times more likely to die before they are 30 years of age. Their uncommon lives require uncommon valour to rise above their complex adversities and break through the many barriers they face. These are the real-life stories of 18 former youth in care as told by them - in voices that are raw and honest and insightful and strong. The authors break down stereotypes and build up respect through sharing what they have survived and what their hopes for the future are. They want other youth to know that they know the struggle is real, that they are not alone, and that life can get better. It is their hope that this book will also serve to inform practice, act as a resource for those who work with children in care and influence meaningful change within the system. Storytelling is a pathway to healing. All profits from the sale of the Youth in Care Chronicles are invested in future projects that will benefit youth in care."The authors, for me, quietly honour the youth who still struggle, while still celebrating those that overcome tremendous odds and are able to control the pain rather than allowing the pain to control them. They are fighting back and giving hope to others". Peter Smyth, Social Worker, Author, Advocate

  • - An Immigrant Life
    av W Lawrence Lipton
    203,-

About four hundred years ago Jews had to adopt surnames. Based on his life experience, one man took the name TRAUERSPEIL, which means Tragedy. Though your name is tragedy, that need not be your life. Though history might not exempt your family. It all depends on where we are and when...and the fact the there might not be the tragic where. This is a story about a Galicia immigrant who was there. Where? Well, that's the outline of several stories. And there is a second story...about someone who was also there -- or a catalyst for change in the lives of those who were and are there. How do we tell a story about stories? How do we encourage strangers to read the story? Do we want to? This book began with Grandpa smoking his cigars and telling tall tales about things that happened at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th century. It began with a teenager and a tape recorder sitting and listening in 1960... Tall tales. Just grandpa's stories. Sixty years later, the internet and access to the Harvard library allowed the stories to be verified... Strange coincidences -- of all the children who were his siblings, only he had a birth record that could be found. A tall tale about meeting a historic figure over dinner, and it was reported in a minor newspaper article. A family story that said a grandma died approaching 100 and in perfect health -- the details were never mentioned but appeared in a newspaper article during Prohibition. Pathes crossed, time spent, history touched upon -- a story and another story, with stories still emerging as history unfolds.

  • av Lonnie Jepsen

From the author's incredible Introduction: I am impossible. I was born just after dirt was invented in Iowa. Even on the day I was born I caused trouble. My mother had 11 miscarriages before I was born, and I weighed a gigantic 2 lbs. 3 oz. at birth. I spent the first five months of my life in the hospital, and I was given the last rites twice. That is why I am the only person with my name in the whole world. It just proves that God has a sense of humor and is very sneaky. God created me just like a duck billed platypus and for the same reason; to be pleasing. My crib was a wooden bucket and yes, I have the picture to prove it. I nearly drowned twice and had pneumonia six times in one year. Along my journey in life, I have tried to commit suicide three times. I contracted an unknown disease which caused me to be in comas for seven years. I spent 289 days in the hospital in 2013. I forgot how to walk twice, was put on life support five times and my heart stopped four times. I have also had three hemorrhagic strokes. I do not have much of a short-term memory. I may repeat myself a few times. Please allow for some grace for some of the stuff that I repeat (that may sum it up). I just put down what comes to mind. During the ups and downs, I weighed between 315 pounds and 157 pounds. This is just the highlights or low lights depending on your point of view. Mostly I saw no light. In 2014 I was the third person in line for a transplant on a Thursday. Saturday morning at 3 AM (notice God laughing again) the nurse walked in and said the other two folks were too small for the organ. An operation that was supposed to take 10 hours took five. I got a brand-new bellybutton and a hood ornament. I have a Mercedes symbol on my tummy. After that, I saw the light and decided to be upgraded to a child of light. I have been to the finish line at least twelve times and have been brought back so I just keep on becoming more impossible as I go along. I am not exactly old, nor am I wise enough to be an elder, but I are ELD. Our journeys are not only measured in time and distance but also in the experiences that we have along the way. The difference between old and eld is: Old is Over Long Distances; Eld is over Extremely Long Distances. My journey has been extremely long (in fact I flew around the world in 11 days. I spent four and a half days in a series of airplanes) and have had a lot of ups and downs, I had to climb a lot of rocks, and I occasionally took the wrong turn. I have been led to share my journey and some of the experiences and observations that I have had. What follows in this book is what comes into my mind. Space has been added to the book so you can make take notes. There will be a little bit for everyone. I will mix a little laughter, silliness, an occasional pearl of wisdom. You will find that I are a mess, but a happy mess none the less. You might say I am mixed up. If you only read the words you will find yourself tied up in knots. Look for the meaning(s) behind the words.

Now in his 70's, the author looks back at his life to explore the seeds of behavior that blurred distinctions between love, empathy, and codependency--behavior that would allow, his bipolar wife, in mental decline, to exploit "the imperfect logic of love." The author's journey includes a career in law and investment real estate with outrageous adventures along the way. The cast of characters include Barack Obama; Muhammad Ali, Robin Williams and the mysterious Black Label lady. You rarely hear a man's perspective on a codependent relationship which makes this book particularly interesting.

  • - A Barren Woman Gets Busy, Angry, Lost and Found
    av Pamela Mahoney Tsigdinos
    201

From celebrity and news websites to streaming and social content to lifestyle blogs, family-building successes are routinely and glowingly shared and celebrated. But where are the voices of those who are unable to have children? In relating what happens when nature and science find their limits, Silent Sorority examines a seldom acknowledged outcome and raises provocative, often uncomfortable questions usually reserved for late night reflection or anonymous blogging. Outside of the physical reckoning there lies the challenge of moving forward in a society that doesn't know how to handle the awkwardness of infertility. With no Emily Post-like guidelines for supporting couples who can't conceive, most well-intentioned "fertile" people miss the mark. Silent Sorority offers an unflinching and insightful look at what it's like to be barren in an era of designer babies and helicopter parents.Silent Sorority received the Team RESOLVE Choice Award for Best Book.

"The angel does not deal with space, only time. Time is as far down from duration as an angel can penetrate. Therefore, the footprints of all angels resemble bookmarks and can be found in every single biography and in the cumulative story of humankind, the multitude of human biographies we know as history." -Siegfried Finser Footprints of an Angel is the story of a man in search of his angel. His search begins with various events in his life that he finds difficult to explain. The fact that they happened is incontrovertible, but how did they happen? On close inspection, the most obvious causes are indefensible. Again and again, he discovers that major turning points in his life were not well thought out or carefully planned. Indeed, they seemed to happen largely by accident, the results of coincidence or even a series of miracles. The author uncovered a startling number of such "accidents." They seemed to occur in a meaningful sequence, too purposeful to ignore. Following this story, the reader witnesses how the evidence grows and offers increasing conviction that an angel is functioning and acting in his life, revealing a relationship between angels and human life on Earth. The author offers each piece of information taken from direct inquiry into his life story-"footprints" that reveal the presence of an angel. Footprints of an Angel will encourage readers to look with fresh eyes at their own lives-not superficially, but with special attention to turning points and the intricate details leading to actual events. People often say, "The devil is in the details." This book shows that the angel is also present in the details of our lives.

Vas a llegar.
