  • - Finding greener pastures on the other side of tragedy
    av Robert a Henslin
    158,-

Rob Henslin found himself standing in the ashes of what had been his life asking, "What happened?" He had battled and survived a relapse of leukemia, and received a bone marrow transplant for a chance at long-term survival. Then as he began his recovery from that arduous procedure, his marriage of twenty-two years crumbled under his feet. Partially disabled, walking a path of post-transplant recovery fraught with complications and setbacks, and deep in the midst of painful divorce proceedings, Rob needed to find a way through the fog that enveloped him. With his German shepherd, Sam, riding shotgun, Rob began a journey to find greener pastures on the other side of tragedy. His honest and humorous writing style brings readers along on that journey. You'll laugh at Sam's adjustment to country life, and find encouragement and hope in the realizations Rob has as he seeks to better understand his past in order to build a future. "When You See the Cows, Make a Left!" offers insight and perspective not only from Rob's journey, but from several of his friends who waged their own battles against daunting challenges, and whose stories are included in the book. If you find yourself in a fog, facing seemingly overwhelming circumstances, this book offers practical insights that can help you take steps forward toward greener pastures.

In this book you will see how I turned my tests into my testimony, and you will learn how you can do the same.

  • - A Memoir of the Liberation War of Bangladesh
    av Cordelia Fuller
    113

Rezaul Islam was a teenager during the period of Bangladesh's war of independence from Pakistan in 1971. A sensitive and skilled writer in his native language (Bengali/Bangla), he published the original version of this book in 2017, to warm acclaim. More recently, he worked with editor Cordelia Fuller to produce an English translation of this compelling work. From a review by Laszlo Czaban, former lecturer at Leeds University: "This book centers on the experiences of one extended family during the nine months of the Bangladesh Independence War. It describes ordinary events (not many violent ones, despite the war context) and ordinary and extraordinary situations, people, and communities. All these events are seen through the eyes of a young teenage boy, whose perceptions are about the people he knows, their roles in the family, their roles in the community. This book is a kind of a memoir, and not a diary. It is a collection of memories, sometimes more organized, sometimes more mosaic-like, but a set of memories that cover the year of the Independence War.Even the victory that comes at the end of the book is described through the return of the 15-year old freedom fighter, i.e., through the actions and behaviors of family and friends. Thus, the author's story-telling style is maintained throughout. This is a valuable addition to the limited first-hand accounts of the Bangladesh Independence War, written in a style that welcomes the reader to gain insight into family, broader relationships, and communities."

  • - Hope for a Fresh Start
    av Sunmbo Adeoye
    271,-

Seasons of chaos and storms are inevitable in life. These seasons can make you feel abandoned as if all hope is lost because the wreckage left by the storm can seem beyond repair. Such was my journey to refurbishment. First, they lie against you, then they condemn and try to belittle the miracle they do not understand. Adulthood was messy initially, painful and heart-breaking, until I looked to God for help. That was when each stumbling block became a steppingstone to success. Today I look back through this book's pages, and I can see how fruitful the journey has been in retrospect. You may relate to this entirely, or this may not be an accurate reflection of the last 10-years of your life. Still, there's something I have written in this book that will turn your life around; you will experience a total overhaul of your mindset and in the name of Jesus, you will receive deliverance. If you desire transformation and a garment of praise to replace the overwhelming heaviness, dig deep into the following pages and be REFURBISHED. To be refurbished is to be as good as new. If a manufacturer has refurbished a product, then all defects have been repaired and proper function restored. Once tested, the manufacturer can resell the product with a guarantee, because they are confident that the product will meet the same standards as if it were brand new. I, Adesunmbo Adeoye, have been refurbished - tested and certified by God - you can be too. Get ready to be restored, as I take you through my journey of hope for a fresh start.

This is the second installment in the "The Story of Ethan Ruedlinger" autobiographical series, and traces back my adopted lineage, my biological lineage, and my early life; my infancy, my childhood, and my teen years. Each installment in this series is a memoir of sorts. A snapshot of people, places, and events now lost in the sands of time, living on only in the hearts and memories of those who still remain to tell their stories. This series accurately portrays the life of Ethan Wayne Ruedlinger. Everything in this book is entirely factual to the best of my knowledge, and has been checked against several sources. -Excerpt From "Forever You'll Be"

  • - A Memoir of the Swinging 70's
    av Dorothy Freed
    217

PERFECT STRANGERS: A Memoir of the Swinging 70's, is an upbeat, tongue-in-cheek account of becoming sexually liberated and personally empowered-via three-plus years of rampant promiscuity. In 1974, I was twenty-nine, naïve, and deeply frustrated by my inability to achieve orgasm during intercourse with my husband, Paul. When I found him, naked and on top of my good friend, Cassandra, it wasn't the infidelity that hurt the most-it was the sizzling sex they were engaged in that cut to my core. Damn, I thought, watching her orgasm for what seemed like hours. Twelve years of marriage. We were never that hot! With that, my life changed in an instant, and my erotic journey began. I began dating, after splitting with Paul, hoping for another chance at happily ever after-but after a series of unsatisfying encounters, I gave up on love, and launched an all-out search for a sexually compatible perfect stranger. PERFECT STRANGERS spotlights the sensitive issue of female sexual satisfaction. My adventures in the Land of Oz-otherwise known as mid-70s San Francisco-takes place in an era when casual sex seemed as easy as a handshake; but for a woman to achieve orgasm, vaginal or otherwise-well, good luck with that! My sex-positive tale touches on issues pertinent to countless women. My target audience is every woman who has ever faked an orgasm, every woman who has divorced, dated and struggled to start over, and every woman who has dared to live out a sexual fantasy-or dreamed of doing so.

  • - a memoir
    av Anthony Valerio
    231,-

The Conception of a Great Love-"The process by which a great love begins is as hidden as the birth of the universe or the conception of a human being. Here Anthony Valerio, who has lived it, allows us to see it without violating its mystery. This is his story of the improbable but profound recognition that ignited between him -- an "Olive" man, Italian-American writer -- and the acclaimed, doomed Black novelist and activist Toni Cade Bambara. It is so delicate, touching, suspenseful -- I hardly breathed the whole time." "amba12" (New York, NY USA) "Anthony Valerio is in top form in this moving, funny non-fiction novella about the improbable relationship between two middle-aged writers, one Italian American, one African American, both memorable characters whose romance is one for the ages. Valerio has a gift for insight into human emotion. He taps into his characters marrow, their history, aspirations, frustrations, and hopes, as if they were (and here they sometimes are) his own." --G. Guida, professor, CUNY "The substance of this memoir is what makes us human when we come home from struggling in the world. Valerio gives us home as the heart within the heart, the place that is both vulnerable and free. Moreover, it is the place that is true." --Afaa Weaver--author & scholarOne Unforgettable Night"A tender, funny, ironic, and revealing book, about unexpected encounters, emotions that can take us unaware, and how dislocations from our usual surroundings to unknown places and people can teach us about our lives. Valerio writes with a light and deft touch, but what he recounts is heart-felt and very real." Professor Rebecca West, University of Chicago

These twenty-somethings had been friends forever; so there was nothing off subject, as you will see in their banter. They were also new London flat-owners, where they would cook, eat, drink and plan their men-chasing antics in each other's homes. Lots of soups, hangovers, cheese, chocolate and laughter. It was also the beginning of an exciting new era - the Internet had arrived - so 'The Soup Diaries' have evolved as a period piece stemming from these emails, that were amazingly preserved, between late 1999 to the Spring of 2000. My sister (Natalie in the book) had kept the collection, hoping that some one in their group would write it up and give them all a laugh. I eventually stole it away after she passed, to make sister's sometime 'dream' a reality. She had always wanted this life extract published, but even more, in true sister style, she wanted the movie made. She had selected the names of the stars who would play each of them and I give the characters in this book their movie star names for several reasons - but, mostly, to protect the innocent. (Insert LOL, as they learn in the script, is more than just lots of love!)If any of these actual stars - Natalie, Nicole, Andi, Cate, Brad, Tom - read and approve of the manuscript, have your people call my people. The actual movie would be great fun. To all who think that some of the past is worth preserving, however small a piece, you're right.

An inspiring journey of trust and belief. We all need to cultivate the feeling of love and self-worth as well as acceptance. Love for ourselves and others around us. In a world where insults, criticism, and fears are spread too generously alongside messages of unrealistic beauty attainment and expectation. We find that spark that's hidden deep in us and find the truth and gratitude in our lives. A deeply moving memoir, with its share of humour, heartache, miss steps and successes. Truly a roller coaster of emotions. A way forward means embracing your past, forgiving those who have wronged you and not holding too tight on our self-defeating thoughts of anger and despair or the displaced pain in our world. Instead, we embrace the imperfections and finding happiness within it.

"My Not-So-Ordinary Life" is an autobiography that tells the author's life story up to age 28. The book reminisces about her innocent times in childhood, reveals the difficult experiences she faced in adolescence, and shows how she persevered and changed her life as an adult. The final message of the book is: Life will have its ups and downs but, ultimately, you will be okay, and maybe even good, in the end.

2020 will be written in history as one of the strangest years in the hyper-nuclear information era. In the year of our lord and saviour Brexit and following four years of bitter political fights about reality and our future, It was meant to be the year we moved forward with our divorce and into blissful sovereignty. Instead, a silly little virus swept over the planet like the first horseman of the apocalypse bringing along his three cousins- insanity, paranoia and corruption. From toilet rolls to toppling statues, from fighting infinite boredom and existential crisis number 54 to clapping for NHS workers. We ate out to help out in summer so we could be boarded up for the long, cold winter alone.'Together Alone' chronicles two years of lockdowns, outrageous scandals, unwanted alcoholic memories, a dizzying number of deaths and finishes with a story about the crucial and life-saving vaccine. Together Alone chronicles the peak of our shared absurdity and remembers this short traumatizing era before it moves into a forgotten memory.

  • - One woman's journey of love, healing, and awakening
    av Raven Brachen
    214,-

"You're gonna end up barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen," was my father's prediction of the lofty heights my life would reach. The likelihood of this outcome wasn't apparent. I achieved good grades, and my report cards showed glowing teacher feedback. My interests included school musical productions, sports, studying, and writing. I spent my lunch breaks in the library playing chess and devouring books by Tolkien and Asimov.I suppose he thought that once sex came into the picture, I would fall into some sort of sex spell, sending the trajectory of my life on a downward spiral. I knew he was just being nasty. He was an abusive man, even when he was sober. Our mother did not live with us, so we had no protection or female role model.I was ten when my older sister informed me, "When we turn sixteen, we can legally leave home and not be sent back." I counted the years. When my sister turned sixteen, she came into my room and said, "I'm leaving." I was confused, but I could see she had packed all her belongings. I cried as I watched her walk down the driveway and take the taxi to freedom. When my Dad arrived home from work, he asked, "Where's your sister?" I told him what had happened. He could tell it was a surprise to me as well.A year later, it was my turn to escape. I wrote a letter to my mother disclosing what was happening under my father's roof. Days later, as I was leaving the school campus, I saw her standing at the big rock with my grandmother. They had come to retrieve my little sister and me. They took us home to gather our belongings. I left that cruel man behind, claimed my freedom, and never looked back.My life quickly became a spiritual path dedicated to the pursuit of self-inquiry, self-awareness, and emotional healing. Ironically (and unrelated to his prediction), there never was a pregnancy, although I do own an extensive collection of shoes!
