Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's long and varied life-as a young colt he is surrounded by gentle care and comfort but is sold to a series of owners, including a squire, an earl, and a cab driver. Throughout his life he meets all types of people-some kind and caring, and others cruel and indifferent. But nothing breaks Black Beauty's spirit.
Anna Sewell wrote her only novel near the end of her life, and for over one hundred years since, it has been counted among the classics of children's literature.
