The book, Born on a Crest of a Wave, illustrates a poem that men and women of the United States Navy have committed to memory for generations. Ask any sailor How Long have you been in the Navy? and a grin is sure to appear as he or she begins, "All me bloomin' life..." The book presents beautiful illustrations of the poem - King Neptune being pulled by seahorses, an octopus rocking a baby in the cradle of the deep, and a crab's barber shop deep below the ocean's surface.
Jean Edwards, a Maine native whose ancestry ties her to coastal Maine, began writing poetry as a child. This collection embodies her appreciation of the ocean, rivers, islands and all those who live and work on the Maine coast or sail the seas. Some of these poems are serious, some playful, while others express dreams, thoughts and yearnings. Her recent historical novel, "The Glove," traced the life of a Maine girl who grew up on Appleton Ridge and became an actress in New York. It was published in 2005. Of "The Glove", the Camden Herald writes: " Interspersed throughout the story are Edwards' own poems, which add poignancy and texture to the narrative."
