Kirkus Indie Book ReviewA debut book presents a scripturally based approach to the promises of God in an uncertain world.Coleman encourages readers by describing this place with God, a phrase she uses often to denote a believers personal relationship with God as a safe and comforting space in the midst of an often cold and cruel human reality. This place is characterized by four main qualities: acceptance, forgiveness, victory, and purpose. The author is careful to explain throughout her work that even though these qualities are often lacking in the world, the believer can be confident of possessing them within this place, this relationship with God. For instance, other people may or may not accept others for who they are, and any approval may come and go. Nevertheless, God loves and accepts individuals no matter whathis love is unconditional. Likewise, outside of this place with God, forgiveness is never guaranteed nor is at all possible, depending on what has occurred. In relationship to God, however, Jesus was crucified on the cross so that you could experience the benefits of true forgiveness. In an imperfect world, Coleman explains, believers can find a place of perfect peace with God. Throughout the book, the author deftly utilizes specific Scriptures and biblical stories to stress her point. For instance, Coleman underlines the tale of Josephs relationship with his brothers in the chapter on forgiveness; she highlights the story of David and Goliath in the chapter on victory. The authors writing is lucid and approachable, and her tone and subject matter should bring encouragement to those battling with everything from troublesome family members to difficult job situations.A brief yet heartfelt and uplifting religious guide.

  • - A Lenten Devotional
    av Mel Shoemaker
    186 - 384,-

Lent has the historic, root meaning of spring, springtime, and the lengthening of the days. In the days of winter, there is a longing for spring, a longing for the lengthening of days, more sunshine, warmer temperatures, less frost and bone-chilling cold. Lent is the season of springtime for the soul. That certainly is a positive twist on Lent. Commonly, the first thought that comes to mind is a season of penitence and fasting from Ash Wednesday to Easter. Too frequently, the somber aspect of abstinence, self-discipline, reflection, and introspection has so dominated our observance of Lent that we want Mardi Gras to never end. Springtime for the Soul: A Lenten Devotional is a series of readings and meditations composed for ChristiansGods holy ones, saintswho are on a quest to grow and gain a greater understanding of our faith. It is my purpose and hope that you will find the daily readings and the meditations refreshing and encouraging, cultivating the crusty winter soil of the heart and germinating new thoughts concerning the essentials of our living faith.

  • - What the Gospels Really Teach About the Birth of Jesus
    av Jeffery Donley
    299 - 473,-

Much has been said about the birth of Jesus. Come face to face with Mary and Josephas you've never seen them before. Let's unwrap the first Christmas as Jeffery Donley takes you back in time to witness Mary and Joseph's courtship. Stand with Mary before the mighty angelic messenger, Gabriel, as he announces that she will give birth to the Messiah. Hear Mary sing ten stanzasyes, sing! Cry with Mary when Joseph cannot accept her but will privately divorce her. Shout with joy with Mary when Joseph comes to take her home. Walk with Mary and Joseph as you will feel every grueling step to Bethlehem.A cold, damp, stinking, urine/feces-filled room.A burial garment. An animal feed trough.Smell the place where Mary gave birth. Witness what Mary and Joseph used to swaddle baby Jesus. Look where they laid him. Be astonished at what Joseph became! Shiver with Mary as she holds baby Jesus in her arms and sings a lullaby to him. Hear an angelic army sing about the birth of Jesus to shepherds. Tremble in fear with Herod the Great as the Wise Men, the powerful Parthian Megistanes, gallop into Jerusalem. Wake up in the middle of the night and make a strategic trip to Egypt with Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. And rejoice when Joseph, Mary, and Jesus return to Israel. After reading The Counterfeit Christmas, you'll understand the birth of Jesus in a whole new way. After reading this book, your life will not be the same!I have enjoyed my reading and imagining with Jeffery Donley what this most magnificent event of our Lord's birth must have felt like to those who were involved in one of the most astounding events in the celestial and terrestrial world. Here is a narrative that will force moderns to pause and to reflect on the central event in history. Christmas will never remain the same for all who live the story of our Lord's birth once again in the way it is retold here. Jeffery's writing takes a story we all think is so well known it hardly bears repeating, yet Donley puts it so dramatically that it will never seem the same ever again. Interestingly enough, Dr. Donley quietly slips in some great archaeological, linguistic and historical studies that will excite even the average reader. I commend this text wholeheartedly to readers of all ages and abilities.Dr. Walter C. Kaiser, Jr.Biblical ScholarPresident EmeritusGordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

Humpty Dumpty was more than just a cracked egg in need of a quick fix, as the classic nursery rhyme would have us believe. Humpty had become complacent after sitting on his wall for so many years. As he lay cracked and broken on the ground, all he could do was wait and hope. When a wandering knight and a drummer boy offered little in the way of help, Humpty began to despair. A fortunate series of events ensued, and Humpty found himself miraculously transformed. There is a bit of Humpty in all of us, and it is never too late for a miracle. So hold on to your hope, and dont look back. And as Humpty so brilliantly observed, It is a good day for a new adventure!

From the first sign of the light given to my spirit at the awakening and quickening of my soul, my mind has sought diligently to know the one true God. He is the Designer and Creator of all things. My satisfaction will only be found in and by the will of God. My soul belongs to him who is trustworthy. Therefore, with these words put forth in my book, I hope you will find a delight for your edification. I pray that if you are also a child of God, my stories will connect with you in a like-minded way. These are some of the moments in my life, past and present, where he moves within me the desire to write them down, and so I do. This is not your typical storybook in which you will read one story from beginning to end. The book contains many stories about a girl named Heather, my daughter. The story of her and her pony are intermingled throughout my book with poems and memoirs (the writers experiences as lived). My life (as was yours) was well thought out in the mind of God. The pages you hold are some of my documented experiences of his thoughts that he has shared with me, lived out through a gift of life. This book was to have originally been a childrens book, but as I began to write, it proved to be more for an adult audience. The book also includes some Bible scripture.

  • - Wisdom in Time-Tested Sayings from a Man Who Has Been There
    av Len Tomaka
    232 - 414,-

To soon old, too late smart. Over the course of my life, I have happened upon sayings that apply to specific situations in our lives. Actually, they relate powerful lessons. Over time, I jotted down many of these real-world insights and also began to compile a list of my personal experiences that I expected to pass along to my children. But I was married for thirteen years then divorced. We were not blessed with children. So I passed these sayings along to pipe fitter apprentices who worked with me, and the lessons were received very well. Now I wish to share them with a larger audience, to the children and grandchildren I never had. To the parents who may read this, I acknowledge that my list refers to many situations that you might already be familiar with, but some of them may have slipped through the cracks in your advice to your children. Who can benefit from reading them? Anyone of any age actually can draw knowledge from thesewhether one is working, playing, or attending the school of hard knocks.

  • - Keys to Engaging Worship
    av Stewart Holloway
    186,-

There is no such thing as a worship war. We arent fighting over worship; were fighting over preferences. For decades, centuries really, churches have been fighting preference wars over worship methodologies. Whether it was singing psalms or hymns, using screens or hymnals, playing organs or guitars, or using a choir or praise team, if there has been a method to fight over, weve gone to battle. Unfortunately, the only things weve gained from our warring are church splits, declining rolls, and frustrated members. Is that what we most desire from our worship? What would happen in our churches if we went to war for worship or in worship instead of going to war over worship? What if we got so serious about worship that we put our preferences aside and focused on engaging God? Worship is not about songs and sermons anyway. Worship is about a privileged conversation with God! Discover how you and your church can get serious about worship as you delve into the heart of worship. Study who is involved in worship, what you can expect from worship, and how you can get the most out of worship. If we want to see God do great things in our churches and bring awakening to our nation, we must get serious about worship. Lets stop fighting over methodologies and return to the core of worship. Take some time to explore the privilege of worship.
