Das Fremde ist ein zentrales Kulturthema der Gegenwart. Als Problemstellung tritt der Umgang mit dem Fremden auch beim Interpretieren literarischer und künstlerischer Zeugnisse der Vergangenheit oder anderer Kulturen auf. Angeregt von der literaturwissenschaftlichen Mittelalterforschung hat es sich in den Kulturwissenschaften eingebürgert, von ,Alterität' zu sprechen, um die Fremdheit der Gegenstände oder eine bestimmte Analyseperspektive zu beschreiben. Der Band fragt erstmals grundlegend nach der Geschichte, dem Gebrauch und den Perspektiven des Alteritätskonzeptes. Die Beiträge gehen auf der Basis aktueller Fremdheitsforschung seiner möglichen Leitfunktion für historisches Interpretieren nach. Aus Perspektive der germanistischen und romanistischen Mediävistik, der historischen Musik- und Theaterwissenschaft sowie der Soziologie und Philosophie erproben sie das methodologische Potential und die interpretative Anwendbarkeit des Alteritätskonzeptes.

The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems- both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.
