Besonderes Gewicht wird im ersten Teil auf das Zusammenspiel von artikulatorischen, akustischen und auditiven Phänomenen gelegt. Der zweite symbolphonetische Teil behandelt die linguistische Phonetik unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Verwendung dieser Phänomene in Form einzelsprachlicher Lautsysteme und suprasegmentaler Systeme. Die in der Lehre bestens etablierte Standardeinführung ist besonders auch für Einsteiger geeignet und zeichnet sich durch zahlreiche didaktische Schemata und Abbildungen aus. Sie liegt jetzt in einer zweiten, verbesserten und ergänzten Auflage vor. Die zweite, der neuen Orthographie angepasste Auflage wurde typographisch und inhaltlich sorgfältig überarbeitet und um kleinere Abschnitte, insbesondere zum praktischen experimentalphonetischen Arbeiten, ergänzt.
