"A sophisticated analysis of late Roman speeches of praise, this book demonstrates how Julian's fellow panegyrists, all of whom were members of the elite, engaged in a literary back-and forth that communicated their own demands and hopes to the emperor but also translated the emperor's intentions to those through whom he governed. The result is a series of lively, engaging snapshots of late Roman politics in action, as close to a look into the imperial mind as read by contemporaries as it is possible to get."--Susanna Elm, Sidney H. Ehrman Professor of History, University of California, Berkeley "The rhetorical outpourings of interested parties make for curious historical documents, and classical scholarship has not always been up to the challenge. Moysés Marcos's great achievement in this lively and rangy analysis of the Julianic moment is to show how high-profile panegyric could be, at once, commentary on and constitutive of imperial power play."--Roger Rees, St Andrews University, Scotland "This alert and erudite book demonstrates the powerful versatility of praise discourse as a means of political communication in the fourth century and sheds a vivid light on the emperor Julian and his entourage."--Laurent Pernot, member of the Institut de France and author of Epideictic Rhetoric "Emperors and Rhetoricians demonstrates the versatility of the panegyric as a medium of political and personal interests and offers valuable insights into communication between emperor and people in late antiquity. Marcos looks beyond the rhetoric of imperial praise to examine what was unspoken: self-promotion, insecurity, promises, and threats."--Catherine Ware, Lecturer in Classics, University College Cork, Ireland "The emperor Julian is unique in being both subject and author of imperial panegyric. Marcos has given us an invaluable and comprehensive account of Julianic panegyric, which shows just how central epideictic rhetoric was to the emperor's communicative agenda."--Alan J. Ross, Associate Professor of Classics, Ohio State University

This intensely personal and engaging memoir is the coming-of-age story of a white boy growing up in a neighborhood of predominantly African American and Latino housing projects on New York's Lower East Side. Vividly evoking the details of city life from a child's point of view-the streets, buses, and playgrounds-Honky poignantly illuminates the usual vulnerabilities of childhood complicated by unusual circumstances. As he narrates these sharply etched and often funny memories, Conley shows how race and class shaped his life and the lives of his schoolmates and neighbors. A brilliant case study for illuminating the larger issues of inequality in American society, Honky brings us to a deeper understanding of the privilege of whiteness, the social construction of race, the power of education, and the challenges of inner-city life. Conley's father, a struggling artist, and his mother, an aspiring writer, joined Manhattan's bohemian subculture in the late 1960s, living on food stamps and raising their family in a housing project. We come to know his mother: her quirky tastes, her robust style, and the bargains she strikes with Dalton-not to ride on the backs of buses, and to always carry money in his shoe as protection against muggers. We also get to know his father, his face buried in racing forms, and his sister, who in grade school has a burning desire for cornrows. From the hilarious story of three-year-old Dalton kidnapping a black infant so he could have a baby sister to the deeply disturbing shooting of a close childhood friend, this memoir touches us with movingly rendered portraits of people and the unfolding of their lives. Conley's story provides a sophisticated example of the crucial role culture plays in defining race and class. Both of Conley's parents retained the "e;cultural capital"e; of the white middle class, and they passed this on to their son in the form of tastes, educational expectations, and a general sense of privilege. It is these advantages that ultimately provide Conley with his ticket to higher education and beyond. A tremendously good read, Honky addresses issues both timely and timeless that pertain to us all.

"A layperson's guide to the way in which digital currencies may evolve over the coming decades and what this means for government-issued currency. This is the issue that will confront policy makers. Richard Holden integrates a currently quite disparate and technical literature to translate that research into what it all is likely to mean for the real world."--Joshua Gans, Professor of Strategic Management, University of Toronto, and author of The Pandemic Information Gap: The Brutal Economics of COVID-19 "Holden has an uncanny knack for writing about complex topics in a lucid, understandable way. He uncovers the reasons behind the recent spate of banking crises and explains where banking is likely to be headed in the era of digitalization. An edifying read for lay and expert alike."--Bengt Holmstrom, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2016 Nobel Laureate in Economics

"A wonderful read. Neil Lee shows the fundamental importance of linking innovation and equality."--Teis Hansen, Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, University of Copenhagen "A book for policymakers, practitioners, and anyone tasked with pursuing innovation-inspired development strategies. Combining innovation-driven growth with mechanisms by which this growth is distributed among more people, Lee brings academic work closer to those who can actually do something to change practices in the real world."--Josephine Rekers, Senior Lecturer of Human Geography, Lund University

"Wine fraud rarely makes the headlines. When it does, the wine world shouts that "something must be done!" and then immediately drops its guard. Rebecca Gibb's lively, engaging book is a good reminder that wine fraud is as old as wine itself, and perhaps less escapable than most of us would care to admit. Gibb expertly examines the evolution of wine regulations and tackles the philosophical interdependence between the authentic and the fake, all while invoking Richard Nixon and The Simpsons. The result is a witty, smart, and enjoyable romp through a subject all of us should be taking more seriously."--Kelli Audrey White, author of Napa Valley, Then and Now, and Director of Education for the Wine Center at Meadowood "Rebecca Gibb's rollicking prose delves into devious practices stretching back to Roman times and the rogue gallery of fraudsters whose stories belong as much in a detective novel as in an absorbing wine book."--Neal Martin, award-winning author of Pomerol

"Why SNAP Works is a lively, up-to-the-minute account of the history of the program formerly known as food stamps, contested from its onset. Christopher Bosso's compelling explanation of the reasons SNAP survived, and deserves to survive, in the face of so much opposition, makes his book a must-read."--Marion Nestle, author of Slow Cooked: An Unexpected Life in Food Politics "A one-stop shop for SNAP history."--Parke Wilde, Friedman School, Tufts University "What makes this work original and important is that it traces this history in a single volume and brings the story up to present. Bosso has excellent underlying scholarship and also relies on an impressive foundation of primary documents."--Adam Sheingate, author of Building a Business of Politics: The Rise of Political Consulting and the Transformation of American Democracy "This is an original book, and its assertions about SNAP politics and substance are fresh and new."--Rebecca Harris, author of Party Food: A Partisan History of Food & Farming Policy in America

"Through the remarkable life and career of the Morisco polymath Ahmad Al-Hajarī, this book makes the case for an Arabo-Islamic Republic of Letters alongside the European one. In doing so, the author reformulates our understanding of intellectual exchange in the early modern Mediterranean."--Sharon Kinoshita, Professor of Literature at University of California, Santa Cruz and co-director of The Mediterranean Seminar. "The extent to which European Orientalism not only depended heavily on collaboration from Muslim intellectuals but was also matched by Muslim writing about the European world is the theme of Zhiri's important book. Deeply researched and clearly written, this book opens up a new world of endeavor and exchange in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries."--Natalie Zemon Davis, author of Trickster Travels: A Sixteenth-Century Muslim Between Worlds
