I have achieved a high level of education, but what about the many girls who were denied this right? I lived in humble homes, whereas many are sleeping rough in all sorts of weather, including that caused by climate change. Iwas able to provide a decent life for my family, wondering how many of those, who were orphaned by war or injustice, never experienced being part of one. Whilst I travelled to many places, some can't reach the only hospital in the region, on time, by foot. As much as I tried, I couldn't wash away my pain and theirs as we were labelled or discriminated against. We were faced with unfairness and being undermined in the process.

The author is a huge fan of Alan Bennett's work, having studied Talking Heads at A-level. All the characters in Secrets are fictitious, reflecting individuals who are driven by ambition, and the need to be loved. The characters all suffer the consequences of keeping a secret.

Ray Wooster shares memories of his early years growing up in Greenford and Northolt, greater London in the 1930s and 1940s. Telling of 'making do', the days before the NHS and being evacuated to relatives in Swansea during the 1939-1942 war provide an insight into another era. On 6 May 1903, twelve men sat down to dinner at the Café Royal in London and started a ski club. It would become the most famous in the world - the Ski Club of Great Britain. Zermatt was a climbing village famous for the Matterhorn (conquered for the first time less than 40 years previously) but not for its skiing. In those days, to the British, skiing was little more than a slightly odd sport practised by English eccentrics. There were no ski lifts or resorts, but nevertheless the British pioneered Alpine skiing so that they could indulge their passion for a craze that was about to grip the world of Winter sports. Over the years, the Ski Club published an almanac, which became a document of fascinating, amusing and downright bizarre anecdotes of the Brits on the slopes as the sport went from being a minority diversion to the worldwide obsession it is today.
