Very little has been written about Blacks and the Culture they cultivated during the 19th and 20th Century, especially in the South in the City of Mobile, Alabama. Within this book, special emphasis is given and written about the years of the 40''s through the 70''s in which part of this Culture was captured and cultivated. The authors take you back in time to reveal a look into (1) Historical Perspectives (2) Reveal the Influences of the Church (3) The Daily Activities and Dress (4) The Foods and Livelihood (5) The Materialization of The Family (6) An In-depth look at the Community of Old Down-The-Bay (7) One Author''s search for identity after the Destruction of the Old Down-The-Bay Community; A simple formula used to gain Economic Stability (8) The Judicial Practice used to take land away from Blacks and (10) What to do legally to possibly regain lost land (11) The Future Outlook of Blacks. This book highlights with pictures and articles such events as: Society Meetings; Churches and Congregations; Social Functions; Personalities; Local Talents/Creoles; Hair Styles and Fashions; Schools, Teams, Curriculum, and Students; Oral Histories; Foods Combinations; Home and over the Counter Remedies for sickness; Taboos; Slang Words and their meanings; Old Adages; Cleaning & Restoration Methods; The Civil Rights Movement & The Negro Proclamation; High Positions Appointed to Negroes; and Advertisements used during the years of the 1940''s thru the 70''s.Lastly, this book will give my defined meaning of the words Soul, Soul Food; The Blues; Black Language and Usage; A list of Black Music with defined characteristics; and gives you an in depth view of the identity of "WHO BLACK PEOPLE REALLY ARE".It is our hope that this book will instill pride and knowledge of how life was in the South, in particular Mobile, Alabama, give meaning to "Who You Really Are?" being a Black person; be a challenge to others from different cities and communities to research and write in a manner wherein their stories are told from the voice of the people; also, influence others to write about their Black culture and heritage; consult with family elders about the importance of family and church involvement; and, finally look into land that was taken through bogus land deals.

Billy Upshur had always been a man of reason, able to think out any problem that might arise and handle it objectively. It was his nature if it involved family. If it did not have to do with family, it could most generally be solved with a gun in one way or another. But the one he had on returning home with his family and friends, could not be solved with tact, or with his gun. The one he had now, was one he was trying desperately to push to the back of his mind, hopefully, even to forget. But it was hard, because Jaclyn Garnette was a woman he would remember for as long as he lived. He would never hurt Connie, that was unthinkable, his love for her was never ending, and just the thought of leaving his beloved family for another woman was devastating to even think about. It would never happen, he knew this, but it was hard to look at Connie with Jaclyn on his mind, thats why he spent a great many late afternoons at the corral grooming the little Roan mustang, and the big black Jim Stockwell had given him. After several months, he did manage to push Jaclyn aside, or so he thought. Because as the old saying goes, when it rains, it pours! As fate was bound to have it, they were all sitting down to supper late one afternoon when Rodney brought news of a heartbreaking event, one that almost broke his heart, one that would throw him back into the role of gunfighter, and manhunter. Jaclyns Foreman had been murdered, and she herself seriously wounded, and fighting for her life. To Billy Upshur, they both were considered family, and without saying, when family was wronged, as was his way, he would see about it! Only this time, Connie insisted on going back with him, because Jaclyn was the woman that saved his life, and she was bent on being there for her as well. It also meant that Rodney, and his wife were to go with him also, and he dared not refuse any of them. Something was definitely wrong in Decatur, Texas, and he had been summoned by Jaclyns friends to make it right again, and if it was the last thing he ever did, he would see about it!

    - A Survival Guide for the Inexperienced, Unprepared or Unmotivated Teacher
    av Jason W. Day
    241,-

The Substitute: A Survival Guide for the Inexperienced, Unprepared or Unmotivated Teacher was born from necessity. If you are ever in a situation where you are expected to entertain a room full of high school students, ESL students or corporate trainees, this is a book for you! I was educated to be a teacher, but the one thing they forget to teach us was what happens when the teacher you are replacing has left you without any material to work with. If you are an experienced substitute teacher, you can cope. As a new substitute teacher, you may be lost. From that first day, I realized that I would never enter a classroom without being fully prepared. I decided to gather as many fun activities as I could and never look back. I realized that my reputation as a sub grew because of the fun the students were having in my class. I understood that if my classes were interesting and different, I would get more substitute calls from teachers because the kids recommended me. If you are a teacher looking for a job, you understand how difficult it is. If you can impress the students, you are more likely to get numerous sub jobs, which will lead to a permanent position.

This book is about myself and my years in the factory that made the guitars from 1956 to 1970, when they sold the company to Baldwin Piano Comp. All other books on Gretsch Guitars are mainly about the history of the company, and the Gretsch family, the description of the different model guitars, old vice presidents, factory managers and other people who never built a guitar in their lives. Some of the stories are funny and some are serious. The foremen who actually built the guitars using their skills and the bench workers as an extension of themselves were never really appreciated. They were great guitar craftsmen who dedicated their lives to the company store and in the end got the shaft. Wherever they are, I know they will enjoy this book. The bonus section: "Tips for Buying a New Guitar" should interest every guitar enthusiast. The bonus section: "Great Chord Changes" if studied diligently will bring any players fretboard knowledge to a new level. This was taught to me in 1954/55 in N.Y.C. on 48th Street, by "HY White".

  • - A Gypsy with a Very Great Heart
    av Gordon Planedin
    160,-

He was a gypsy, part of a gypsy band. His name was Solomon Levi Brown. His coming was not a part of his parents plans but was more of an example of the old saying that accidents cause people. As a consequence, he ended up as a child of the whole band of gypsies, dined with anyone handy, and slept wherever he could lay his head. They called him Solly MacKeefer, and he started his life on a rough road. He learned compassion as a young boy as he watched a girl cry over her lost pet. He eventually found love with a beautiful gypsy woman, and they brought a child into the world. However, tragedy struck this happy family when they moved to Canada, and nothing was ever the same again.Still, Solly persevered even after facing terrible loss. No matter how cruel the world, Solly refused to be the same. He found friends in unexpected places and even died a hero. At his funeral, crowds came from all around, proving that one man changed many lives. This is Sollys storya gypsy boy who grew into a man and left a legacy of kindness and love. The author, having grave concerns that in the present situation, there is too much discrimination and persecution for the least fortunate of this world and because of his belief that the vast majority of the people as a whole are a kind and benevolent society and quick to respond to the plight of their fellow man. He has tried to show that in this story. And we should all be reminded that someone once said: and as ye shall do unto the least of my brethren likewise shall I do unto you.

The house of Tipheret's parents has been destroyed by the wicked Fire Dragon. The inhabitants of the Village of the Heart have all escaped into Tipheret's toybox. Tipheret is the only survivor.Assisted by her father's copper talking stick, her mother's iron kettle and her cherished toy houses, Tipheret sets out on a dramatic journey of discovery and transformation, where she encounters Trust, Hope, Perseverance and the Power of Love. During her sleep she is taken care of by the wonderful and generous "Snigglee" spirits, who inspire her to meet the Loving Heart which is her guide and inner voice. This tale is for all children between the ages of 6 and 9 years. The author's colourful naive paintings are essential to the story and speak eloquently for themselves.Reviews:Tne of the benefits of this story is the message of Hope and never giving up that it brings to the reader. The fact that Tipheret continues to search for her parents even if she is alone and afraid, brings out the message that even if something is not easy and you are scared you must never give up on your dreams. This is a positive message for youngsters of all ages. Another message it touches upon is, of course, that of LOVE. The message that LOVE conquers all evil. How the brightness of the sun pushes away the darkness, again a message of HOPE. Another theme is TRUST. The trust Tipheret had to have towards the MOST LOVING HEART and believe that this voice was telling here the truth and leading her closer to her parents; such as the TRUST she had to have towards the copper talking stick. What makes the book special is the Village of the Heart idea, symbolic of love. THE MOST LOVING HEART, and the care and love of the "Snigglee" spirits, are again all about love. I think that if the readers do not read this book they will lose three important messages that of HOPE, TRUST and the power of LOVE. I would recommend this book for all students of the elementary cycles. I would simplify the vocabulary if I was reading it to Kindergarten students and the images would have to play a significant role in delivering the message of the story. Even students in the older grades of the elementary cycle could relate to the messages of HOPE, TRUST AND LOVE found in the story. Tipheret the protagonist in the story is an endearing character. The "Snigglees", are adorable little people and the MOST LOVING HEART sounds very maternal/paternal. Patrizia Ciccarelli, Vice-Principal and teacher .....After a wicked fire dragon burns down the village where she lives, Tipheret starts out on a long and lonely journey to find her missing parents. Armed with a talking stick, an iron kettle and her beloved toy houses, she discovers the magic and the mystery of love. An enigmatic tale, beautifully illustrated. A symbolic journey of the heart. Christina Manolescu, Author .......Barbara Sala's "naive" paintings delve into the deepest spiritual and emotional transformations of our time. How do we cope with a world apparently gone mad with violence and anger? Tipheret's journey shows us that the answers lie within ourselves, and our capacity for love and hope. Ann Diamond, Authour.....Barbara Sala's Village of the Heart is a picture book for older readers, or older listeners. In an era where the text in children's books is becoming more simple and sparse, the language here is polysyllabic and quite dense. Sala is a graphic artist, and her unusual, colourful and naf pictures are the main focus of the book. The plot is classic quest: Tipheret comes home to find her village destroyed by a two-headed fire dragon, and sets off with a talking stick, a kettle, and some toy houses to find her missing parents. She has plenty of adventures along the way, and is required to overcome obstacles, and to persevere. As in every classic children's story, there is a happy ending. However, the strength of Village of the Heart is Sala's bright acrylic-on-illustration-boa

The Settlers around Mary Lake arrived in the early 1870s. Unlike many of the settlers of the day, most of these families came by steamship and were from well-educated middle class families. They soon formed a dynamic community around the lake that was focused on Port Sydney. Their concerts, readings, sports and social life were unique. These people intermarried and formed a society that is still strong and has made Port Sydney a special community. The authors prepared this book through hours of interviews with older members of the area. These older people provided invaluable pictures, information, anecdotes and insights into the lives of their parents and grandparents. The book is a window through which the reader can identify with this life around beautiful Mary Lake.

Once, the north coast of British Columbia was dotted with cannery villages. Now only a few plants remain. In Gladys Young Blyth's new history of the nothern salmon canning industry, many remarkable photographs- of the canneries, the fish boats, the workers- provide glimpses of by gone days in an industry that has been of vital significance to the development of the province. For each of the thirty-eight canneries on the Nass and Skeena Rivers the author gives a short history, the location, and a physical description of the plant. Her chronology of early- day to present methods of fishing and processing provides the reader with a clear understanding of how the industry functioned. Who were the cannery workers? How did they live in those isolated locations on the B.C. north coast? These and other questions are answered in this fascinating pictorial history.

Todays choices are tomorrows resultsNothing in life is easy, but with the right choices, we can make things easier. In psychology, the way we think, dictates how we feel, which dictates how we act. If someone wants to change their actions, they must first change how they think. I believe everything in life can be look at as a game. People play games to win, not just to participate. When a person plays a game they began to access the creativity in their minds looking for that avenue of victory. Every game has a route to success, just like everything in life. The only issue, is that not everyone knows what it takes to be a winner. An individuals character is based on the following: Learned behaviors and beliefs, Experiences, Gut Feelings, and Stereotypes; therefore, we are all products of our everyday learning. The good thing is that we all are surrounded with people in our lives who have been through the games that many of us are involved in today. Although those individuals may not have made all the right choices, they can provide insight to the difficulties we face. Older people are not perfect, but they are people whove experienced the many games that life brings; therefore, their insight should be looked at as a blessing towards our choices.
