Fluoride and fluoridation will go down as one of the greatest controversies of the 20th century. Up until the early 1940's, fluorine's effect on life was always deemed poisonous. Cancer, diabetes, thyroid and neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, heart disease, arthritis and osteoporosis have all been linked to chronic fluoride ingestion. We are now exposed to increasing doses of fluoride from toothpaste, rinses, water, food, medicines, showering, bathing, and even the air that we breathe. Our environment has become a literal fluoride dumping ground. This book explores many chronic diseases that plague man today and looks at the scientists that connected these diseases to chronic exposures of fluoride.

Among other things, the STPM helped LLU initiate externally funded research (mostly in biotoxicology) and the practical training of missionary doctors, nurses and others for foreign service. In 1964, the University governing board authorized combining the Department of Preventive Medicine in the medical school, the STPM and the SND into a fully accredited SPH which began in 1967. It pioneered off-campus teaching of public health degrees in the USA and overseas, combined MD or DDS/MPH degrees, and many other unique and innovative teaching efforts that emphasize "health to the people."

Brigadier General William Thomas Meredith, known to his friends as Tom, was born in 1919 in Halifax County, Virginia, where his father was a school principal. After much relocation throughout the state, Tom attended the College of William and Mary on a sports scholarship and seemed to be heading for a career as a professional baseball player. The Pittsburgh Pirates eventually recruited him as a catcher, offering him an annual salary of $3,000 but turned down his extravagant counter demand of $3,500 a year! It was 1941, and war was raging in Europe and festering in the Pacific, so he walked away from baseball and enlisted in the army, beginning a military career that would span more than three decades. After basic and some engineering training, he joined the Haynes Mission, spent two years in the jungles of Burma, leading a guerilla patrol, in Northern India, building air bases, and was awarded a battlefield commission to 2nd lieutenant. Then came Korea, Viet Name (where he commanded the 554th Civil Engineering Squadron) and the 1414th Air Base Group in Saudi Arabia.In 1950, he began a long association with the Pentagon as Officer in Charge of Master Planning, Hqtrs. The book recounts the adventures of Mike Dickin and Simon Park, driving a BL Mini 1275GT sponsored by the Post Office, and nicknamed ''The Buzby Special'', on the 30,000-kilometre 1977 Singapore Airlines London-Sydney rally. It begins with a shambolic foray into France in 1976 which first fired their imaginations and layed the groundwork for their commitment the following year. It then deals with the acquisition of the car and sponsorship, and describes the detailed preparations required for an event on this scale. The trip itself is recalled in ten chapters taking us from Covent Garden to the Sydney Opera House, via Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia from west to east. They probably had a more colourful, chaotic and eventful rally than most other crews, and the tales of Turkish lorries, midnight border crossings, Indian mystics and bouncing off rubber trees are suffused with the omnipresent themes of exhaustion, elation and despair. Despite the epic journey and the often frightening events it recalls, the book doesn''t take itself too seriously, and is written with a wry, self-deprecating humour. In the author''s own words, it is ''an endless inventory of cock-ups''.
