With contributions from experts in the field, chapters in this volume explore the received usage of gratitude. With discussions about distinctions between triadic (benefactored) and dyadic (or non-benefactored) gratitude; between gratitude as obligation and gratitude as a virtue; and between gratitude to people and gratitude to or for things, the volume also raises interesting questions about whether it is proper to feel grateful to those who have acted to one's benefit only from a sense of duty, and whether it makes sense to feel gratitude to those who have actually harmed one. On the other hand, consideration is also given to the personal psychological benefits of grateful attitudes and sentiments, as well as the positive social effects of public acts and expressions of gratitude. The spiritual dimension of gratitude is also considered within the volume.

Water resources in tourist islands have been severely threatened, especially in the Galápagos Islands, where the increased local population has generated attractive income from the tourist services. This study investigates water supply and demand in Santa Cruz, the most populated island of Galápagos. The research encompasses a thorough assessment of the water supply crisis, as well as the quantification of water demand from different categories (domestic, tourist, restaurants and laundries) through surveys, in the absence of water metering. The results yield a wide range of water consumption, questioning the current assumption of water scarcity.
This book discusses modern philosophical treatments of fashion, and of "anti-fashion". Pappas argues that the fashion/anti-fashion debate applies to antiquity, that nudity at the gymnasia was an anti-fashion. Thus anti-fashion provides a way of viewing ancient philosophy¿s orientation toward a social world in which philosophy also has to live.
In this book, Reiss argues in favor of a tight fit between evidence, concept and purpose in our causal investigations in the sciences. There is no doubt that the sciences employ a vast array of techniques to address causal questions such as controlled experiments, randomized trials, statistical and econometric tools, causal modeling and thought experiments. But how do these different methods relate to each other and to the causal inquiry at hand? Reiss argues that there is no "gold standard" in settling causal issues against which other methods can be measured. Rather, the various methods of inference tend to be good only relative to certain interpretations of the word "cause", and each interpretation, in turn, helps to address some salient purpose (prediction, explanation or policy analysis) but not others. The main objective of this book is to explore the metaphysical and methodological consequences of this view in the context of numerous cases studies from the natural and social sciences.

The Fascist Nature of Neoliberalism offers a brief, provocative analysis with special reference to the most visible executioners of its will: the much-misunderstood managerial class. This group simply happens to hold power, and hence visibility, but they do what everybody else does, and would do, all the time. This is because capitalism is an intellectual outlook that thoroughly directs individual actions through fascist and non-fascist repression. This book argues that the only way to escape capitalism is to recover individual intellectual and sentimental emancipation from capitalism itself in order to produce radical solutions.
