The opposite of fear is love. Part 1 ("e;Pulpit to Pew"e;) includes twenty-five selections from candid sermons (reconstituted from his notes) by Joy Ibsen's father, Harald Ibsen, as presented to listeners in rural Midwestern congregations. Organized according to the church year rather in time sequence (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost), beginning with Christmas 1939, each sermon brief is followed by a listener's story (fictional except for a few autobiographical) showing how the listener(s) are affected by fear (i.e., war, death, crops, loneliness, disappointments, disability, prejudice) and how their lives are transformed. In the new section, part 2 ("e;Parables and Pandemic"e;), Joy again uses her father's sermon notes to interpret biblical parables, relating them to our present era. Timeless but timely messages arepresented by a(fictional) woman pastor to an urban New Mexico congregation who are challenged by fear of COVID-19, social isolation, economic loss, and the unknown. Each chapter shows the power ofhow spiritual truths, community support, andnew insights enable us to live unafraid in current realities. The sermons and stories are very powerful because they reflect the community-centered philosophy theologyof N. F. S. Grundtvig ("e;Human First, then Christian"e; and "e;Freedom for Loki as well as for Thor"e;), a nineteenth-century philosopher-theologian with amazing relevance to twenty-first century issues and whose teachings are well known to the Ibsens but not well known in the United States. Becoming unafraid is an incredibly helpful path to spiritual renewal which is necessary for handling both existing and upcoming worldwide changes.

Are you tired of living a life of mediocrity? do you wish that God would fight for you and not against you? are you tired of running against the wind, two steps forward- one step back? Good! There is no good reason that anyone should live in anxiety, doubt, worry, and fear. All anyone needs for a life of success and fulfillment is totally available and totally accessible. Pick yourself up one more time and make a decision to change things. If anyone in the world is successful and fulfilled in this life, everyone can be. The rules are simple. Jesus said there were only two.Matthew 22:37-40Thou shalt love the love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. If we live according to these two principles, our life will be blessed; if not, it won't.

The eleventh chapter of Hebrews has long been considered the Bible's book of faith. Descriptions are given of Bible heroes known and unknown persevering in a daily walk of faith to live and witness the Gospel message. Aristarchus is representative of the little-known disciple, but the Bible gives us just enough about his service as a disciple with the Apostle Paul to learn and know that his life made a difference as a servant of God.Aristarchus is first mentioned in Acts 19:29, when he was grabbed by a mob. He was described as being with Paul in his travels in Acts 20 and traveling with him to Rome in Acts 27. He is later mentioned by Paul in his epistles written from prison to the church in Colosse and to Philemon. He faced many of the dangers and rejections experienced by Paul, but the little thread of his service given in the Bible reveals he faithfully stayed the course.

Can you imagine not being in verbal or social media contact with anyone for over one hundred days of travel? What does it take to be self-sustained and responsible for all of one's actions and decisions? The solo canoe journal stories are a combination of the day to day excursions and decisions that a solo paddler must make to successfully navigate from one lake or campsite to another and to another and so on while managing to stay safe and to not get lost in the wilderness. For a lost and rootless society that worships celebrity and wealth, this book is a real eye opener. The writing is insightful and honest; the author has been everywhere, done everything, met everyone, and although he learns from all these incredible experiences, he keeps on moving. Nothing impresses him very much until he discovers true wisdom as embodied in the great sage he meets towards the end of this book. This book is a real page turner-a fascinating story-a 20th century Siddhartha tale.
